Do you know the difference between Leadership Skills and Management Skills? How does this relate to Real Estate and Active Rain?
I was asked to write a blog post by a few of my Active Rain friends. This request was based on a glancing observation I made about Leadership. So with that said, here we go.
First I will address my observations about Management skills, followed by Leadership and hopefully I can connect the dots to Real Estate and Active Rain. These observations are based on my own experiences, which have been influenced by my military and corporate management leadership positions. As well as my years in real estate and being on this platform shortly after the original founders created this platform.
There are many theories, books and seminars about management skills and how to become a good or a great manager. The core principals can be learned by reading about it, by emulating i.e.: learning from great managers we worked under or have observed from a distance. This can be done relatively easily, especially if you have a great manager who is willing to mentor you. It is almost like pouring the knowledge into your head, as if there was a funnel and an opening in your head. Easy to do if you are willing to learn. The management skill can be conveyed in the form of Training Seminars, Videos about Marketing, Blogging, Templets and about myriad of different subject, but do not confuse this with leadership or leadership skills.
Unlike Management skills, Leadership is much harder to learn, and some people are of the belief, that it is virtually impossible to teach or learn.
There are different styles of leaders, some are very different from our own style. Let’s be clear, Leaders can have many different styles, some can be abrasive, confrontational or abusive. Not necessarily the type we like or appreciate to work with, live with or be affiliated with. Not all of us prefer the authoritarian style leaders, some of us prefer the democratic or more permissive type leaders. Never the less, just because we do not like their style that does not make them less of a leader. Examples of different styles are best illustrated by a few examples: George S Patton, Douglas McArthur, Ronald Reagan to name a few, all had different styles, but were very effective leaders.
There has been an ongoing debate whether leaders are made or born. The majority are born but a few have learned to become leaders.
- Most of us can tolerate different styles of leadership as long as the governing principle are solid. Some of us choose the environment that is more compatible with our style.
- To give an example: I do not function very well if someone tries to micro manage me. I like to be given the mission or assignment and hope that my Manager or my Leader is wise enough to recognize, that I will accomplish the assignment to the best of my abilities and I will be doing it up to the standard and it will also exceed expectations. On the other hand, if I am micro managed I will begrudgingly get the assignment done, but not necessarily exceeding expectations.
- Most Realtors switch companies, because they either do not like the leadership style of the Manager or they do not like changes in the governing principles of the Brokerage they work for. This gets amplified if they are being penalized financially by the changes in the leadership style or the lack of leadership skills of the Broker. They begin to look for an environment that is more compatible to their style of business ethic and client service needs. In other words, the style they are accustomed to work with is what they will reach out and find somewhere else.
- Most of us look to leaders for inspiration, for guidance in achieving our objectives or goals, team building spirit as well as security. There are other needs as well, to many to name here. The best leaders have an awareness of what we are lacking and where we need help. At the sametime they are willing to help us get it. In my experience the greatest leaders have charisma and can be role models for the needs we want to achieve. That could be any one or all of the objectives we want to achieve.
In closing, Leadership has to be authentic, real and believable, if it does not fall into all these three points, then people will have a difficult time following and believing in their Leader. They will not give the respect and the leader’s advice will be ignored. This has been some of the reasons over the years many have left this platform and moved on to other platforms.
