I’m headed over the Narrows Bridge from Tacoma to Gig Harbor this afternoon with my good friend and coworker Janet Matzke. Our (friendly reconnaissance) mission is to scout historic downtown Gig Harbor thinking it would be a great new location for our #mobilecomcamp 3 clock hour class.
Now that we're here and walking along Harborview Drive and looking over the shops and the boats in the marina, I know this is a perfect place for our class. It's so much of what I love about the Pacific Northwest.
The class is about marketing your community, and that in fact is marketing you. I’m awestruck for a moment when I remember being here as a kid and today I’m walking down Harborview Drive with an iPhone 6 Plus in hand snapping photos and video, taking a few calls, responding to emails and text messages, posting to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and my Tumblr blog and I Googled several times for some local info. Once upon a time, who’d a thought?
A big marketing strategy shift for me this last year is turning a lot of my focus towards small locally owned businesses. I’m taking the class into these neighborhoods with great results and have found that most local businesses are now using the social platforms to get their word out. So let's play!
Janet and I talked to several business owners that afternoon. We stopped at art galleries, used and vintage bookstores, a music store, coffee shops, the marina, and had a wonderful lunch at El Pueblito, Mexican restaurant.
The point I’m getting to is one of personal reward and referrals. I’m a big believer as a raconteur, instructor, student, and member of community... “Practice what you preach and demonstrate it.” So that old saying, "action's speak louder than words", still rings true!
I really enjoyed the encounters we had with local business owners and staff. They got what we were doing and embraced the fact that while we were having the class we were going to create some social media buzz for them via Instagram, Yelp, Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.
Of course we’re a clock hour class and there’s a 3 hour plan in place, but it's so much fun to get out of the classroom and interact with the locals while your learning something.
As a community, we’re in it together. When you win, I win. I enjoy the fact I’m connected to your success and they are to mine. I’m simply here, engaging you and your audience and because I enjoy your products, service, and expertise, I acknowledge, support, and share it.
Our first session of Mobile Communication Boot Camp(aka) #mobilecomcamp in Gig Harbor was a big success and happened on February 9, 2016... We all had a lot of fun, mission accomplished! The class is for real estate brokers and we use Instagram, Yelp, Twitter, Facebook and Google+ to craft a mobile marketing strategy that embraces location, lifestyle, and community...
