Are you living under a rock?

By

Unless you've been living under a rock... you've heard about the latest powerball lottery.

As of this writing, the powerball was up to one-point-five-BEEEELYON-dollars!

To most of us, that's more money than we can imagine.

Let's just say it's one heap of a lot of money.

Most of the time, like many, I don't play the lottery.  I guess it's just not big enough to catch my attention.  Yeah... like those small jackpots just aren't good enough, like $4 million dollars, and I'd turn it down... right.

But when the lottery gets up this high, many of us jump onto the bandwagon.  I am a member of a couple of office lotto-groups.

So, what's your tipping point?  How high does the lottery have to be for you to drop $2.00 on a chance at winning a dream?  Will you risk two bucks to be a part of this social phenomenon??

I played, only because.. come on for $2 bucks! It's worth the fun of having a chance. After all, the chances may be slim but someone has to win!

the only way to be assured that you won't win, is if you don't play.

I usually start to take notice when the jackpot hits the news.  Otherwise I don't bother. Once it hits the news, I keep buying until someone wins it.  I have just as much of a chace winning as anyone else and you know....someone IS going to win at some point.

you're like me.  Until it's serious money, it doesn't even hit my radar.

Heck, 2 tickets cost less than a cup of Starbucks... and you may have the opportunity to start you own coffee shop!!  Why not!

in this case... a solo win would amount to more than the gross national product of over 10 countries in the world.

My husband has played the same number every week for years.  He thinks his odds of winning are going up each week, but I say they're always the same - 1 in 292 million and some change.  But it's fun to play.

the odds never change... they're several zillion to none.

It is fun to think about what you would do if you actually won! I only play out of peer pressure.  I actually forgot all about it for Saturday's drawing...maybe it was meant for me to win tomorrow night.  Wouldn't that be something though?  Wow.  I already bought my ticket AND I am taking my $5 to the office for the pool too.  What would my broker do if we won and all walked out?  Yikes.

Alan- we used to play each week, this was before the big powerball.  But now we play when there's a big hooplah ...like this week.

Alan, I haven't played in years, but I've chipped in last Saturday and for this drawing.  And oh yeah, if anyone at work ever asked over the years I'd toss in a bit because no way was I letting them hit it big and leaving me behind to do all the work!  Bill

There is not really a financial tipping point for me.  It's when the hype is big enough they start talking about it on the news.  I think I've bought a ticket for the last two drawings and the one tomorrow night.  So I've added $6.00 this go round.  And it's likely that will be my 2016 contribution. I feel sure I didn't spend more than that last year.

Donald on the other hand throws about 10 dollars a week away on tickets.

I think that the $2 lotteries in Ontario have fixed top level prizes that do not increase but I'm not positive.  We have never had a lottery offering anywhere near $1.5 billion.

If I happen to be in the liquor store and see a big number, I'll buy one. I bought a ticket last week and one this week because hey, someone has to win it and it might as well be me! I don't have a particular tipping point.

Good morning Alan. I did laugh reading this. Like you I never play unless there is an usual prize. Funny, a million dollars would be a gift.

I've never even purchased a scratch-off ticket.  And there's no question that you march to the beat of a different oboe player.

About 30 of my Evers colleagues and I are eagerly awaiting the results of the big drawing.  I feel it in my bones.  One of those tickets will have the winning number, even thought I have Saturn sitting on my second house (not auspicious).  But hey, you never know!

I normally will purchase as it grows.. I just don't drive by my lucky store that often to stop in.   I did this time and won $100.00 woo hoo, just 1 number away from either $50k or 1 million... sigh

I do send clients scratch off's as a thank you if they entered a contest and didn't win .
