Security Tips - When Selling Your Home

Are you thinking of selling your home on your own? The information below will help you when you need to schedule and show your home. The information below is also very helpful for sellers who currently have their home listed with an agent.

Be safe, Be Smart, Be Careful, Cautious and Be Aware

  • For your own safety, never set an appointment with anyone to see your home unless they have given you their name and number and you have called back to verify that number or at least text them back. You can easily do this as a way to verify the appointment. There are also many apps and services available you can run their information threw. I also ask for a copy of their drivers license, some will some will say no. Again with today's technology they can snap a picture from their phone and send it to you electronically. You can also try searching their name online to see if the information they have given you matches. No matter what, when you have showings tell others the time of the showing, who the person(s) is and if possible have more than one adult home to greet them.

  • Never let potential buyers know your schedule. Never give a caller information about your home’s security such as deadlock bolts, security systems, and so forth.

  • Always have a back-up plan when you allow strangers into your home, especially if you have children. If you have a neighbor you trust with your children you should consider letting the neighbor watch them during the showing. Keep your phone with you and ready if you need to call for help. One tip I like to share when doing open houses or showing homes: let neighbors know that if they hear your car alarm going off to call for help. Sometimes its easier to have your keys in your pocket and push the alarm button vs a cell phone to call for help. Whatever you are comfortable with please do and watch out for you.

  • Never let a stranger into your home without seeing some identification. If the person says he/she is a real estate agent, ask for a card, then call his/her office to verify the information if you don’t recognize the person.

  • Keep a log of everyone who has looked at your house. Get their name, telephone number, address, car description, tag number, and any additional information that could be helpful in the event of a future burglary. All of these people would be suspects.

  • If you advertise your home, do not include any information that might breech security.

  • Remove from sight all valuables, including guns, jewelry, silverware, and valuable collections. Medication is another item in high demand. I suggest locking everything up. For medication you take daily or need to have with you, take it with you when you show your home.

  • Never leave strangers alone in your home. One scam that is very common is for a "couple" to show up to see the home. They will split up and of course you can only follow one of them. They keep you distracted while the other person searches your home for valuables and medications. Today a lot of the electronics are also small enough to easily be removed from a home without being noticed immediately.
