The La Crosse Winter Rec Fest starts Friday January 15th. This community event was started by the La Crosse Parks and Rec department as a way to encourage people to get out, have fun and get exercise during the winter, instead of just hibernating.
The Rec Fest Medallion hunt started yesterday with clues that are given out every day until the medallion that was hidden in the city somewhere is found.
Many competitions and activities are scheduled, from the traditional winter activities of snowshoeing, curling contests, ice fishing competitions, ice skating exhibitions, hockey jamborees to non winter sports of outdoor volleyball, broom ball, kickball and even a softball tournament. I hope they don't use a white ball!
The organizers won't make everyone freeze all the time. There is even a euchre and sheepshead tournament. For those of you who have never heard of sheepshead, it is a card game that seems to be unique to Wisconsin, as I have never heard of it in other places.
Concluding weekend includes fireworks, and a torchlight hike in Forest Hills Golf Course.
