A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:

-
Communications: have a battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for bot
-
Flashlight and extra batteries
First Aid Kit
- Whistles: to wear around yours and your children's necks, to signal for help
- Dust masks (N-94s are best for particulate, esp. after a fire): to help filter contaminated air, heavy plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place

Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water, as used in swimming pools. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners. Or, buy water purifier tablets from a local camping store or outdoor outlet.
