What to do with massive furniture?

When doing a consultation, what is your advise to people that own these massive couches?  In this instance, he has nothing else to work with and he (a bachelor) won't take this out, but it takes up the whole room.  I don't know what I could do to downplay this feature.  What would give this room some pizazz?

Letitia -- I am assuming that this couch is in 3 separate pieces.  If that is the case, I would remove the middle wedge-shaped piece and have two separate sofas.  Perhaps you could talk the homeowner into storing one of the additional pieces as well as the wedge piece.  If not, arrange the two sofas on either side of the fireplace so they are facing each other....be sure that you position them so that the sides of the sofas that have arms are visible.

Are the bookcases on either side of the fireplace built-in?  If they are not and the homeowner plans to take them with him, perhaps you can talk him into relocating them because the space would appear much larger without them and the fireplace could be better appreciated.

Thanks for the input. I thought those would be good ideas, also.  I think my problem is that I think that people will think I am crazy to do those things and yet, I believe that it would help.  I suppose that as a stager, you have to get over some of those feelings and just do your job.  Thanks again.
