South Street Seaport - What To Do!
The South Street Seaport is an historic area of New York City, located in Manhattan. It is situated next to the financial district and bounded by the East River. The area is a designated historic district and features some of the oldest architecture in Manhattan with a large number of restored 19th century commercial buildings. The Seaport features renovated mercantile buildings and historic sailing ships, as well as modern shops and nightlife.
Visitors to the area should make sure to make time for the South Street Seaport Museum. Founded in 1967, the museum has served for years as an educational historic site, and in 1998 was designated by Congress as one of several museums which together make up “America’s National Maritime Museum.” It sits within the 12 square-block historic district that is the site of the original port of New York City. The museum has over 30,000 square feet of exhibition space and educational facilities, such as a working 19th century print shop, maritime library, archeology museums, and fleet of historic ships.
The shopping in South Street ranges from historic craftsmen shops to modern malls. Pier 17 is home to many shops –like the Salty Paw, selling specialty dog treats and toys --and a food court. Historic shops like Browne & Co. –a stationer which traces its roots back to 1775 –are equal part shopping and education. Seaport Studios is the neighborhood’s newest addition. The new Studios are a two-story collection of artisan wares and art installations with a rotating list of craftsmen selling their items and showcasing their work on a revolving basis.
South Street Seaport has no shortage of great places to eat and drink. The Seaport Smorgasbord, located along Fulton Street, is a large outdoor food market with many popular restaurants manning stalls. If you’re looking for something a bit more historic, there’s Fresh Salt, which serves up modern food in a former smokehouse built in 1885. Or you could try the Bridge Café, which claims to be “The Oldest Drinking Establishment in New York” and is located in a building formerly used as a brothel.
During the summer, the Seaport hosts numerous events, such as the Seaport Food & Film Festival and the Brazil SummerFest.
