Historically the epicenter of New York City’s immigrant cultures, the Lower East Side has slowly transformed into one of Manhattan’s trendiest neighborhoods. Today the area is a melting pot of historic Jewish and German vestiges and newly built boutique shops and fashionable eateries.

Though large portions of the Lower East Side have been newly redeveloped, there are a few treasured legacies of the neighborhood’s historic past, most notably the legendary Katz’s Delicatessen and Russ&Daughters, a long time purveyor of smoked fish and bagels. A number of historic synagogues also still remain. In addition, the Tenement Museum helps keep the neighborhood’s history alive, with a series of restored apartments, giving a glimpse into the lives of the immigrants who once populated the area during the turn of the last century.
The Lower East Side is known for its nightlife and prime partying spots, however it is also a residential neighborhood, with quiet streets and historic, walk-up buildings. Redevelopment of apartment buildings in the area has been on the rise, as well as the construction of new housing, such as the Blue Tower, a 16 story building which houses 32 condominiums as well as commercial space on the ground floor.
