When it comes to breakfast in the Melbourne, FL area we have quite a few good choices. If you are looking for a place to fill you up (at a good price) and get your day going, I can give you a long list of places that will fit the bill perfectly.
If you are looking for a place that is a bit different and kinda cool (and kids will absolutely love) try Backwater in Historic Downtown Melbourne, FL.
To say this place is different is kind of an understatement. The griddles in the middle of many tables will signal something unusual is coming. The Louisiana Swamp look will give you the impression of a restaurant that belongs on a dirt road, backing to a bayou just off the Mississippi River!
We ordered off both the regular menu (Fried Green Tomato and Spinach Eggs Benedict) and the pancake menu.
The Fried Green Tomato and Spinach Eggs Benedict was not only unusual, but also delicious. They came with black cherry grits as a side. You will have a full menu of choices if pancakes is not your thing :)
The Pancakes come out in a squirt bottle designed for you to make your own. You order your batter (I picked the special Red Velvet cake batter) and the toppings (I picked pecans). The griddle is hot and ready to go. Skirt the batter on the grill (you can make about five nice sized pancakes), toss in your toppings and flip them when ready.
I was stuffed when I was finished and they were delicious. You may want to add a (always available) a Mimosa...they are $4.94 or $15.95 for a carafe (go for it!).
The lunch menu is also interesting and deserves further investigation (I will be back).
