The economic slate gets off to a slow start with government offices closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King’s Birthday. But after that comes a bevy of data about the housing sector, the latest inflation reading and new details about manufacturing.

  • After touching a 10-year high last fall, home-builder

     

    confidence has slipped in recent months.

    Watch for the survey from the 

    on Tuesday to see whether builders are feeling better to

    start the year, or if rising interest rates and global turmoil

    are weighing on their minds.

  • 2 Inflation Anticipation

    Federal Reserve policy makers have been anxious to see signs of firmer inflation, but they might not find it in December’s consumer-price index reading, released Wednesday by the Labor Department. A further decline in gasoline prices last month may have held back overall price gains.

  • Solid Starts

    The December housing starts report, released byCommerce Department on Wednesday, will provide a view of home construction for all of 2015. Housing starts are on pace to have the best year of the expansion, but they are unlikely to top 2007’s prerecession level of 1.35 million. And that figure was down from more than 2 million in 2005.

    4Slowing Manufacturing

    Last month’s purchasing-managers’ index compiled by data provider Markit showed manufacturing activity expanded at the slowest pace in more than three years. Watch for January’s preliminary report, out Friday, to see if the measure moves into the contraction zone to match other measures of manufacturing activity.

  • 5Sweeter Home Sales?

    Sales of existing homes suffered the largest monthly decline in November since 2010. Look for the December report from the National Association of Realtors, released Friday, to see if sales bounce back. The Realtors blamed the fall on new mortgage regulations slowing the closing process, but buyers have also been challenged by rising prices and a limited selection of properties.
