Pick up the Phone

Mortgage and Lending NMLS #1135039

It is one of the basic principles of business “pick up the phone and return the call”. When you have bad news or no news it is often difficult to do, however, I have found that when this is the case, making the call is the most important thing you can do.

Think about it, how often have you waited to hear back from someone and you are simply just waiting and thinking the worst, “our offer wasn’t accepted”, “my loan wasn’t approved”, “when will I be closing?”. A simple phone call stating “we have not heard back yet”, or the “seller is out of town and we have not received a response”, is incredibly helpful. The client now knows that you are still working on their behalf.

Last week I received the following email:

Thanks for getting back so quick. You and XXXXXXX are the only ones that respond to messages that's why I'm hoping to use XXXX with any mls that looks good.  Joe.

It made my day because returning calls when you have no news is not easy. In the mortgage world, we often spend time waiting for mortgages with issues to be run up the chain of command. The client does not know you are actively working on the file unless you tell them. It is in these times that I have to remind myself to make the call, stay present, think of the client!

Good morning Nancy. You are so right, communication is vital no matter what we do for a business, but when it comes to the mortgage or real estate business it is imperative.

Great job with your post!

Nancy - Keeping the client informed by calling them is a critical part of communication, even if you are just calling to let them know you don't have any information yet, but you are working on it.

This is so important. People just want to feel in control in any way they can. Having that "we still don't know anything" call is all it takes sometimes to keep them calm.
