Charlotte Harbor in Southwest Florida is a natural esturary covering 12,653 square feet. According to Wikipedia it is the 2nd largest open water esturary in the State of Florida that spans the west coast along the Gulf of Mexico coast. Flowing into Charlotte Harbor in Charlotte County is the Myakka River and Peace River. Today I was in the southern part of Desoto County driving across a road we call Lettuce Lake (County Rd 761) and snapped this photo of the Peace River. According to Wikipedia, the Peace River is 106 miles long running up into central Florida. As for me, my experience has been canoeing the river with a youth group up in the Arcadia area and boating on the Peace River in the Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte areas.
My love of this river is its beauty and peacefulness. However it also vital to our source of millions of gallons of drinking water every day to this region. It also is known for fossil hunting. When canoeing the river, we met a college group who were hunting for prehistoric bones, shark teeth and other fossil finds.
Those who love to know more about this pristine river, check out this PDF: http://www.dep.state.fl.us/gwt/guide/designated_paddle/peace_guide.pdf and this site: http://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/education/interactive/peaceriver/natural.php
