DINNING OUT with MAN's BEST FRIEND

It is safe to say that "dinning out" pretty much means dinning outside when it comes to dinning with your canine companion at a Honolulu restaurant. Because of food preparation and safety concerns, the State of Hawaii and the US Federal Govt. have certain restrictions resulting in the prohibition of pets in public dining facilities with the exception of service animals. However, restaurants that offer outdoor dinning areas that are completely separate from their food preparation and indoor service areas, are typically exempt from pet restrictions and it is left to the establishment to decide if pets are acceptable on premise. If in doubt, call before your arrival.

The Law and Dog etiquette dictates that only disposable plates and bowls, if you do not bring your own, be used in lieu of the establishments plate ware. Always ask if your canine is allowed to sit with you in an outdoor dinning area and or if it is acceptable for their carrier to be placed in a seat with them inside. It is always advisable to allow your dog to relieve him or herself before dinning at an outdoor venue, in order to reduce the chance of any "accidents".

Make sure your pet is well socialized if you intend to take them out with you to dine. If you have a larger breed of dog, visit the establishment in advance of bringing your pet, to see if they are welcome. It is completely up to the discretion of the owner/management whether or not to allow your dog on the premises, be respectful and introduce your pet, the better behaved the more likely you will be received with aloha. If you own a breed of dog that is bred for it's viciousness and intimidation leave them at home.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of Dog Friendly dinning establishment in Honolulu. Please understand that the list may include dinning establishments that are no longer in business and or may no longer allow dogs in their outdoor dinning area. Please contact the respective business through the link provided to confirm dog friendly status.

Aloha, Kimo --- I really like the photo you have used for this post -- very inviting. I was in a restaurant in Los Angeles on Friday and saw a couple of dogs and they definitely were not service animals.  Pet friendly dining spots are something that seems to be in demand in our area.   Nice post to highlight those in Honolulu.

Aloha Michael, Mahalo for the compliment on the photo. There are only a handful of casual beach side restaurants in Honolulu and this one has one of the best views. If you have a small enough dog that can fit in a pet carrier you can pretty much bring them anywhere as long as they can be completely enclosed. Larger breeds are being seen more often out and about as well. Thanks for the visit.

I often see pets, more and more in resturants and public places and wonder if there are rules, or just set by the business owner.

Aloha Ellen, typically the Health Code, is consistent from city to city in the US, however, there may be ordinances that describe what is absolutely not acceptable. We have a pet friendly culture in Hawaii and have more outdoor dinning than most so it works here. Thanks for commenting!

Hi Kimo - This is a great resource for Honolulu pet owners. Here, unfortunately, the law extends to the outdoor dining areas, but there are places where you can sit with your dog just on the other side of the barrier, and that's almost the same.

Aloha Dick, small dogs in carriers are relatively inconspicuous in most dinning establishments. I have an aunt who takes her toy chihuahua everywhere, securely conveyed in a designer pet tote. No restaurant would dare turn her away but you would never know the dog was there, either. I might get a little nervous if Bubba, the drool laden 200lbs Neapolitan Mastiff sitting next to me, started staring me down as I dined on a pork chop.

Kimo what a great idea to post about PET FRIENDLY restaurants!  There are several in my area and every so often Barney is lucky and gets to come along - of which he loves!  One of the places even has a 'watering' station equipped with bowls for the dogs. Smart!

Aloha Anna, I think there is a niche in many communities for dog friendly dinning options. A watering station is a thoughtful idea for the pet minded restaurateur. Mahalo for visiting!

Aloha Kimo- This is a wonderful idea for a post!  We have many outdoor dining areas where dogs are allowed and we all love seeing them.  Once in a while, the smaller pooches have big dreams and try to take on one of the larger dogs.

Good to know that this is an option in your island paradise Kimo.

Though my friend Jack would like to join us in the restaurant, my wife is always firm in her insistence that he must remain outside and not test this boundary.

Kimo Stowell What a great post for all dog lovers!  We have many pet-friendly restaurants in Boca Raton and Delray Beach.  The town of Palm Beach is especially dog friendly.  I did a post a couple years back on how they have water bowls out everywhere  Palm Beach Loves Its Dogs.  Loved seeing this!

As a dog owner and lover, I always look for restaurants that allow Diesel to enjoy the view and any scraps that fall to the floor.  Al fresco is perfect, particularly if it isn't too hot! But your doggie must be well socialized to be invited! Great post and glad Kathy Streib  included it in her lineup.

Kimo

This is really good information for those dog ownrs who like to dine with their pets. We are seeing more and more dogs at restaurants in our area, at least some of them. It's certainly very common in Europe from what I have seen. Good to know the policy of the place who wish to dine at before you head out, only to get turned away at the front door.
