Is Selling Real Estate Black and White, or in Living Color?

Is Selling Real Estate Black and White or in Living Color?

Remember when we decided to venture into Real Estate and stated taking classes? I’m sure you do. All those Rule, Regulations, do’s and do not’s. Everything seemed to be in Black and White. No, I’m not talking about the print on the page. In this blog, It’s all about you! We all need to abide by the rules, but there is an added feature, that wasn’t in the Real Estate books.

The Black and white Agent – Has a mindset on how much they can make on the sale and goes through all the necessary motions, only doing what they have to, without any extra effort. After the sale is complete, the agent cashes the commission check and the client never hears from them again.

The Living Color Agent – Is vibrant and has interest in the client, their hobbies, how the children, if they have any, like the home and which room would be theirs. The agent is friendly and goes out of their way to make the transactions as easy as possible and even after leaving the closing table, keeps in contact with the client, many times becoming like family. They send Birthday cards and Holiday cards throughout the year, stopping in occasionally to visit.

Do you know some agents that fit in these categories?

We, as Real Estate Agents, also see the difference, while working with them. I want to be the Real Estate Agent who is NOT “By the book”, “Get it done” and “Cash the check”, agent, without personality.

I want to be known, as the agent, that clients want to be around. After all, which Agent would you refer your friends to, when they need to Buy or Sell a home?

Larry I love this analogy!  I've never heard it put in quite this way but I am definitely a Living Color Broker/Agent.

This is such an easy to grasp anology, Larry. I'm also living in ful color as an agent and a person. No black and white for me. Happy Tuesday. D

I don't think it is necessary to perpetrate the "cash the check" agent to the public as I doubt I have ever met one of those. I've met a lot of idiots, and people who should not be in real estate, but none who were really racing to "cash the check" because, well, first they would have to actually find the bank.

Larry Johnston - good point - specially Black & White agents...."only doing what they have to, without any extra effort."

That's the difference when we work by referrals - we 'know' them lot more and know lot more even after the transaction is completed....

I was an agent and then a broker over a 19 year career in real estate. I knew far more black and white agents than "living color" agents. They did as little as possible, studied only when they had to take CE for licensing, and didn't care whether their clients were happy or not - as long as they could cash the check.

I'm glad to be a member here, where I get to associate with the full color variety.

I suppose you have to walk a fine line between professionalism and being overly friendly.

Great analogy.  The more we know about our clients lives the better we can help them.

I live very much in the Living Color category. I'm black and white when it comes to contracts but in how I deal with my clients I'm very flexible.

Larry, this is a great point. The black and white agent is not as likely to get referrals and that is a big mistake.

We are here to serve and the consumer and their needs should come first.

Larry, Congrats on the great feature!  For the most part, I am glad to say that I am the living color agent.  The only part where I am lacking, but working on,is learning about the kids.  I do need to get better at that!  I always contact clients long after the closing happens!

I like to have fun with my job, and part of that is really getting to know my clients. How can you not form some sort of a relationship when you spend a lot of time with people helping them to find a home? Great post and congratulations on the feature. You are on a roll with getting featured.
