8 Tips to Build Your Referral Business
1 -- Do More Than Your Clients and Business Associates Expect
The very best way to gain the confidence and support of others is to exceed their expectations. We always remember someone who surprised us by giving that little extra touch to their work or the person who did some unique extra step for us.
2 -- Take Advantage of Your Business and Social Networks
It seems we all have networks these days. Some are business -- like LinkedIn or Toastmasters or the Chamber of Commerce. Others are social - like Twitter or Instagram or Pinterest. And any of the networks can become both social and work related. All of these networks are full of referrals if we know how to gain them
3 -- Ask for the Referral
It seems that many of us are afraid to ask for the referral ---DO NOT BE AFRAID!!! --- I will repeat that --- DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR REFERRALS!!! People want to give referrals to you but if they don't know that you want referrals, they will not usually speak up. They are just as confused about giving you a referral as you are about asking for them.
4 -- Know How and When to Ask
You Must make referrals a priority. They should become your primary source of business. There are two types of referrals you should aggressively work to obtain. Direct referrals and out-bound referrals. The direct referrals become your new clients. The out-bound referrals are sent to others. You may or may not receive referral fees for the out-bound referrals but even if you do not receive a check, you are building your foundation for future networking and it is good karma.
5 -- Target Related Businesses
Besides your clients, related businesses are great. If you work to support others in the industry and they see you exceeding expectations and if you ask --- you will receive referrals. There are always many complimentary businesses that can form the basis for referrals.
6 -- Take Time to Build Referral Relationships
Referral Relationships will take time and effort but they are certainly worthwhile. You must get each referral partner to have complete confidence in you. This includes each client, friend, family member or associate. Treat each and every contact with them as a priority. This is the foundation of a fantastic referral business.
7 -- Educate Your Referral Partners
Take the time to inform them about what referrals are helpful for you. They need to know more about your business and also how you can even help with out-bound referrals --possibly on the other side of the state or even the other side of the globe.
8 -- Always Keep in Touch
Blogs, emails, thank you cards, phone calls, personal meetings --- they all work but you must be consistent and keep in touch or they will forget and the referral you could have had is gone.
