The Alamo in San Antonio, TX is still a very popular local attraction for both tourists and residents. I can remember as a small child in elementary school going to the Alamo on my first tour. I have made several visits back there since that time, but each time I am always amazed at what I see and read about all those brave men who fought and died for their strong stance against tyranny, and beliefs in freedom for all Texans.
Many still remember that San Antonio was once known as the “Alamo City” long before it was called the “River City” because of our beautiful River Walk in Downtown San Antonio. The Alamo dates back to 1718 when it was originally established as one of the missions in downtown San Antonio. The Alamo is one of five missions in San Antonio, but it is the most talked about since the Alamo played a very important role in Texas independence from Mexico. The Battle at Alamo still captures the imaginations of Americans after more than two decades.
See my first post on The Alamo in San Antonio to learn about the history of all those who fought for Texan Independence. I love seeing that statue in the front of the Alamo that shows some of those brave men, like Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and William Travis. All Texans know the famous “Remember the Alamo” cry that was shouted out by the men under the leadership of General Sam Houston, who lead us to victory over General Santa Anna of Mexico at the Battle of San Jancinto, shortly after the Alamo felled.
The Alamo is opened daily. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, a women’s organization including descendants of the earliest Texan residents, has managed the Alamo since 1905. Today, more than 2.5 million people a year visit the 4.2-acre site, which includes some original structures dating back to the mission period. I would encourage anyone coming to San Antonio to add a tour of the Alamo on their list. You won’t be disappointed.
