West of Market House
Historically Significant

The West of Market Neighborhood is a popular Kirkland district with historically significance. It has had a distinctive role in the development of Kirkland starting in the late 1880's when the land was purchased to be part of Peter Kirk's new town. More than 100 years later, in 1999,  The Kirkland Heritage Society was given a grant from the city to conduct an inventory of properties meeting established historic criteria. Over one third of the buildings in this citywide inventory are in the West of Market Neighborhood including two buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Additionally, there are nine homes here that are registered with the Historic Society.

What's the West of Market Neighborhood Like?

The West of Market Neighborhood runs along the shoreline of Lake Washington just north of downtown Kirkland to Juanita Bay. Homes here range from quaint to luxury and the residents enjoy panoramic Lake Washington and Olympic Mountain views. There are five distinct parks in the West of Market neighborhood including two that feature waterfront beaches, plus the Juanita Bay wetland preserve. You'll find varying architecture with a mix of old and new homes indicative of the districts transformation over the last 15 years. As the city became more popular, the land more valuable and the views more sought after, the original cottages began to come down to make room for gorgeous high end homes. There are still a few hold-outs however, those who swear they'll never leave their prized shanties. After all, they're not making any more land, right? So, as the market became stronger, the land values began to surge well past the median Kirkland price point of $1,000,000 and suddenly their homes were worth far more than Peter Kirk could ever have imagined. Whether your tastes are grand and luxurious or small and classic, you'll find it West of Market, for a price.
