This Dryer Vent Leak Did Not Need A Thermal Camera, But It Helped!

This dryer vent leak did not need a thermal camera, but it helped!

As soon as I saw it I knew it had a problem.

It was rusting, and there was a coat of lint all over everything nearby!

There was even a gaping hole.

When the dryer was turned on the lint nearby blew in the breeze!

And this vent travels 25' from here, over a drywall ceiling of a family room.

What's going on as it passes over that drywall ceiling to discharge outside the house TO AN UNSEEN AND INACCESSIBLE LOCATION UNDER A DECK?

So, to review - we have a cracked dryer vent, clogging somewhere, unable to be seen, and without the ability to clean the outside discharge location.

Excellent!

What does it look like to Mighty Mo?

Like a metal tube with weak spots and leaking heat!

More problematic is the idea that it is rusting, weak, and probably leaking all over the ceiling.  And most likely clogged at the outside discharge location.

This could be a house fire in the making.  Certainly access through the deck outside needs to be provided to get to and clean the opening.  And that tubing may need to be replaced from the inside all the way to the outside.

My recommendation:  dryers can be dangerous appliances, perhaps the most dangerous in the house.  The tubing should be metal, and cleaned regularly.  The outside discharge hood needs to be visible, accessible, and cleaned also regularly.  How regularly?  When it looks like it's clogging!  How often is that?  Well, THAT depends on how many people live in a house and what kinds of clothing they wear!

If they dry lots of big fluffy towels, it could need frequent cleanings!

Sure, Kat, dryer clogging depends on the family and what they use and dry.  But clogs happen to every vent sooner or later.

Been there Jay. Recently in fact. I had a leak between ceiling and upstairs floor caused by dryer vent that did not look quite as bad as you show in your post. I hope everyone takes your warning seriously and checks their dryer vent, or has it checked by someone. It is has real potential for causing leaks and water damage, but more importantly it's a fire hazard.

This is an issue many are unaware exists. I am thankful you have informed the ActiveRain community about this problem. It may save lives and property. Great job!

Scott - when I say the dryer could be the most dangerous appliance in the house, I am serious.  5% of accidental death in the home is due to dryer fires!

Dorie - when I see'em I put dryer issues on the report in bold print!

Michael - like we haven't seen this a couple of times!

WOW Cousin -  hopefully you don't have to climb a 60' ladder or get up onto the roof!

That is not a good situation.  I recently saw something similar while doing a walk through a house for a market evaluation.  The dryer in the basement was running and the smell was of wet clothes.  I showed the homeowner where it was escaping and suggested they get a new hose.

Ed - lots of people still have the plastic or Mylar hoses, which are not at all in favor.  And lend themselves to problems!

Jay, I had an interesting experience at a friends house several years ago.  We were sitting on the deck eating while they were doing laundry.  I noticed the dryer vent flap was not opening.  Further investigation discovered that the previous owners had moved the dryer a few feet to the right, pulling the dryer vent pipe in the process.  Half way across the family room, the segments separated and the dryer was venting into the ceiling of the family room.  They later opened up the ceiling and pulled several years of dryer lint out and fixed the problem.

What!?  And got rid of all that R-value?!

Stephen - that kind of unseen problem can be serious in many ways.  Good catch!
