Is Everything in Balance
and Do You Know When it's Not?
Sometimes the idea for a post comes first.
Other times my musings flow from the viewing of an interesting photo.
It's pretty easy to tell that things are in balance, from the bottom to the top, in this rock sculpture at the beach in Cardiff by the Sea. And we would clearly know when an inbalance has occurred - it's pretty obvious.
My musings upon seeing this photo made me think about the balance, or perhaps inbalance, in our personal and business lives.
We often talk about the importance, indeed the necessity, of balancing one's personal life with business. It's not always easy, and some of us no doubt are better practitioners than others, for a host of reasons. Having a strong foundation, as in this rock sculpture, is key.
It occurs to me that often we know when things are out of balance - we are spending too much time working, health is an issue, we feel particularly stressed or uneasy, our finances are not where we would like or need them to be, personal relationships are strained, spiritually we feel out of sync. It might not disrupt everything, yet one inbalance may, as it would in this sculpture, lead to the whole thing tumbling down, although the foundation might remain intact.
I don't have an answer as to how to avoid this from happening. But being aware of those things that are the most important components in our lives to maintain a balance, whatever they might be, can help monitor how things are going. Being honest with yourself about the status of finances, health, your real estate business, and other matters is important - playing ostrich won't make the problem go away!
Setting expectations, for ourselves and for others, can help keep the balance of personal and business from getting out of kilter. And putting things on your calendar, especially those personal things, makes it easy to keep commitments and not let other less important things interfere and offset the balance.
For me this balance is always work in progress. But I find that thinking about it, having it as part of my business plan, talking about it with the people who are important to me, and using my calender judiciously all help me be more balanced.
I think this photo needs a prominent place on my wall to help remind me.
Any thoughts?
You may wonder where this photo came from. I had a moment of inspiration at the beach the other day in Cardiff and created it. Then took a bunch of photos, with no plan in mind...it was just fun to do. Who knew where it would lead?
