It's National Wear Red Day -- Go Red For Women Today

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty 179530

Go Red For WomenToday is National Wear Red Day as part of the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women® campaign. We tend to think of heart disease as primarily a male problem, but heart disease and strokes kill one in three women every year and are often referred to as the "silent killers." Fortunately in the past 10+ years great strides have been made in raising awareness that heart disease and strokes are the number one disease affecting women. The graphic below provide great information about the top 10 accomplishments of the Go Red For Women® campaign.

Wear Red Today

Check out the 10 Ways To Go Red this February and start you down your path to minimizing your chances of developing heart disease or suffering a stroke.

10 ways you can celebrate National Wear Red Day:

Charlotte, North Carolina has a very active American Heart Association Chapter and tomorrow, February 7th, they are having their 58th Annual Greater Charlotte Heart Ball at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. It's not too late to order tickets. This is a great event and if you've never been, you should make a point of attending at least once.

I've got my red on today! Go on out and get your red on today, too, for National Wear Red Day!

The signs for men and women are not the same...having a heads up and staying tuned to how you feel or a change in how you feel is a very  important thing for all of us.

Sally K. & David L. Hanson ~ good morning, Sally and David -- you are so right and for a very long time many signs were missed and women mis-treated because doctors assumed the disease impacted them the same way as it did men. We now know that's not the case at all.

Gita Bantwal ~ thanks, Gita, for stopping by and taking time to comment. Have a great weekend.

Will Hamm ~ ya think, Will? Charlotte is a sea of black, blue and white today. Every other person in the supermarket is wearing Panthers gear. I've never seen anything like this!

Roy Kelley ~ it is important, especially as symptoms in women are different from those we've been taught to watch for in men.

While I'm a day late and a dollar short Nina, I have to say that I have two girlfriends who had silent heart attacks and had no idea that they were sick! it wasn't until a physical later the same year that they both found out - grateful to be alive.  Thanks for the reminder Nina.

Nina Hollander I'm also late but I'm going to add my two cents.  Listening to Doctor Radio in the car, there was a cardiologist talking about heart attacks and women.   The doctor explained that women have different symptoms and your first symptom could be your last symptom, so pay attention and if you think something is amiss, get to the hospital ASAP.

Joanna Cohlan ~ hi Joanna... I've heard of instances like the ones you describe including mini-strokes with women not realizing they'd suffered either a stroke or heart attack. I don't think these kinds of events are as subtle in men, which is why we women have to be so much more aware of the signs leading to stroke and heart attacks.

Elyse Berman ~ good morning, Elyse... I think part of the problem with women is that we tend to sluff off signs and not take action. With strokes and heart attacks it's particularly dangerous to do so.
