Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Are you ready to hold your sweetheart in your arms, tell her you love her and shower her with chocolates and flowers? Are ready to hit the town by picking her up in a limo and taking her to have a romantic dinner at your favorite restaurant? How many of you are ready to “pop the question” and present her with a gorgeous diamond engagement ring? Have you set up a “get-a-way” weekend at a romantic bed and breakfast or the penthouse suite in a downtown Richmond Virginia hotel?
Whatever you’ve chosen to do, you’re not alone. Almost 62 percent of the US population will be joining you. It’s also one of the few holidays celebrated in countries all over the world. It’s a special time couples set aside to express their love for each other in extra special ways.
We thought we’d check out some other fun facts on February 14th. An internet search brought up a month’s worth of reading, but we did our best to narrow it down. Offering knowledge in the more “unknown” areas of the day, some we didn’t even know! We were amazed at some of these:

- $448 Million is spent on Candy
- 58 Million pounds of Chocolate is purchased
- 36 Million heart shaped boxes of chocolate are sold
- 174 Thousand Gallons of “Bubbly” are purchased
- 6 Million marriage proposals will be made
- 9 Million+ pet owners will buy their pet a valentine’s gift

Then we thought, where in Richmond can you spend time with your sweetie on Valentine’ Day? Richmond offers a great variety of things to do and places to visit, depending on what you’re looking for. We’ve given you some general ideas, but if you do an internet search on one that looks interesting, you will find more information and dozens of choices.
- Stroll along the Richmond Riverfront - There are shops and restaurants and the Civil War Visitor Center. The Richmond canal cruise may be open also.
- Visit the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts or the Virginia Museum of Science
- Bundle up and walk along Monument Avenue, a truly historic area of Richmond
- Take a tour of Agecroft Hall, The Poe Museum or the Jefferson Hotel
- Visit one of the many parks in Richmond, where walking paths are plentiful
- Take in a movie at one of the many cinemas and follow up with dinner at one of the great restaurants this area has to offer
- Or do dinner and a movie at Cinebistro in Stony Point Mall, a great shopping area
Most of us are well aware Valentine’s Day has become extremely commercialized. We doubt if that will ever change, for it’s the perfect time to give gifts of cards, flowers, chocolate, perfume, diamonds and romantic dinners. And who doesn't like the extra attention?
But there are certainly options for you to show you care without spending a
great deal of money, is any at all. It could be a simple walk in the park, a poem or song you wrote, a card you made all by yourself, breakfast in bed, binge watching favorite movies or a day to enjoy doing nothing but being together.
It’s not really what you do, how much you spend, or what you give the person you love that matters. It’s the opportunity to show once again how much you love and care about them.
The Murray Morris Group hopes your Valentine’s Day is the best!
