Enjoy the Process Not Just the Paycheck

Reblogger Praful Thakkar

We wear too many hats when we are a solo Real Estate agent and work with our clients.

Not to mention getting overwhelmed with all the details of the transaction before we have a paycheck in our hands!

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905 has a better idea --- she says,

Enjoy the Process Not Just the Paycheck!

Enjoy the Process Not Just the Paycheck

I recall the first check that I got after my principal broker and mentor allowed me to be a buyer's agent on a tiny purchase of a lot. I think my first paycheck was all of $300! BUT--I was ecstatic! My first sale! Woohoo! I was on my way as an official REALTOR®  with Vernonia Realty.

That was about 10 years ago. Many moons later, I have realized that I don't WOOHOO after receiving each check as much as I did after that first time. Now, being a seasoned realtor with some crazy transactions under my belt, I feel like I can sit back in the saddle and not just look at the beginning of a sale with that adrenaline rush, or at the finish line where you are steps away from closing, but I have also learned to enjoy the process. Much like a director, when shooting a film, television and the like, you have to be involved (and enjoy) each part of the process to get to a final product that people want to see.

It was terribly daunting at first. All of the damned paperwork! The verbiage I had to learn, the number crunching, the formulas to translate square feet to a fraction of acreage, the crazy contract terms that people were coming up with and gosh all of those abbreviations I was supposed to recall the meaning of.

Then there was the learning curve as to what the title company does, what the loan officer does, when to call the inspector and all of the things to learn from watching him or her! YIKES. And juggling all of the balls, while verbally tossing them (at just the right time) to all of the parties who ALSO needed to hold them for awhile! Directing it every step of the way.

Yes, it could have sent me running for the hills. But, you know what? I have actually ENJOYED the process and the players. Each transaction has created this new mini-series of my own reality show. Some got nixed after the first episode (the strange buyers who would use my time on their holiday time off and then never be heard from again) OR the long series that would seem to take way too much time to unfold and come to a nice ending. There were those smash hits that just seemed to be the right formula start-to-finish. Ahhh, I love those. I don't really have to DO much except direct gently and let the players be themselves in a nice smooth set of scenes.

The end result is that I have gained so much from each and every transaction to add to the layering of my knowledge in this my own real estate reality show. It's filled with every kind of emotion, and at times I come smack-dab against something that is totally foreign to me. Much like a foreign film, I'll look for those sub-titles to help guide me through when I'm not feeling quite comfortable with the language presented. Or use an interpreter who's business savvy (my principal broker, my favorite loan person, all supporting cast).

It's totally refreshing to start with new clients, a new listing, because I'm now comfortable in taking on all of the roles, wearing different hats, knowing my part and seeing with a wider lens how things will turn out if you sit back and enjoy the process as it can provide all kinds of aha moments, much like an epic documentary that takes you somewhere grand and still teaches you small lessons all along the way.

This is a great re-blog and unbelievable photos. I remember my first few transactions being so incredibly excited to receive a check. I thought at the time that I'd always be that excited. I love the money, but enjoy my clients so much I'm always a little bittersweet to end the process with them.

Well, Praful, how sweet of you, thank you! And yes, going solo has its ups and downs. But, for the most part, I embrace it.

I completely forgot that I wrote this! And how timely, coming up on the Academy Awards with all of the movie adages I used.  And I'm also in agreement with Chrissi Chapman Topoleski after an intense relationship not calling each other or e-mailing/texting it's kind of similar to a breakup!

I've had clients email me or text me after a few days to tell me they miss me. :)

Love the story.  My first sale was a very gross $152,000 single family home in San Diego.  You have to work hard to find something that low priced. However I can remember how excited I was to be doing my first deal.

Some of the processes I have enjoyed more than others. I had one that closed this week that was a pure pleasure and the buyer was happy, happy. So was I.

Praful Thakkar Thanks for delightful reblog.  Love the analogy to 'break up' in the comments between Gayle & Chrissi.

Chrissi Chapman Topoleski I guess it is natural for all of us to feel that way initially in our business - and then we have feelings for our clients.

I got to admit, though - I was concerned about the final amount that I received from my broker - much less than half of total compensation!

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905 thanks for a great post - directly from your heart.

Yes, it feels like a break up for sure.

We can still stay in touch by many other means - and stop by at their home if we want.

The bigger loss I feel is, missing young kids who were with me all the time when I have shown the homes to these young couples.

Joy Bender for our first transaction, I do not believe price is ever going to be a concern/issue. We just want to help them (and get paid....lol!)

And that's where Pareto's principal plays a major role - 80% of our happiness comes from 20% of 'closings'!
