London Bridge Needs Lights Too!

By
Home Inspector with Charles Buell Inspections Inc.

The other day I posted a picture of a light bulb with water inside of it.

Light bulb full of water

By some of the reactions I got, as to whether the bulb was functional or would function, I thought it would be fun to see just how much “under water” a light bulb can be and still function.

Here is a little video to demonstrate—drum roll—

There are lots of misconceptions about how electricity works. Some of those misconceptions may make people safer by instilling fear, while others are of no use at all.

Lots of people assume that electrical connections will not work under water.

This video shows that it can work just fine. Issues arise over time with corrosion of connections leading to failure of the components. It can also represent a hazard depending on how conductive the water is. In this case, ordinary tap water is not very conductive.

(Unless you know what you are doing it is best to not try this at home) :)

Good morning Charles. I don't mess with electric ever: a contracor once told me. This is interesting though.

Sheila, and that would generally be good advise, until you know what you are doing---and even then you still have to be careful

Nice demonstration. Here in Central Texas we have a heavy clay soil that moves dramatically when the moisture content of the soil changes. Last year two of our underground wires failed, when we dug them up we saw that they had caught on fire and literally melted together. Somehow the pressure of the ground moving broke the conduit and eventually exposed the wire which then arced enough to catch fire. Never would have know except the aerobic septic tank and the Christmas lights didn't work.

Arcing conditions are not good in the context of electrical connections--things will indeed heat up.

I see you want to produce a better video.

How about a bulb in your mouth and you dunk your head in the bath tub?

I will tackle a lot of home repairs and projects.  But, I shiver when it comes to electricity.  A couple years ago, I wanted to exchange out my almond colored receptacles for white.  I knew how to do it.  I had been married to an electrician for over 20 years.  I even watched the on-line videos on how to do it.  Yet, when I unscrewed that first outlet cover I began to shake.  I reached for the phone, called my ex and said, "John, do you remember when we divorced I didn't ask for child support or alimony?"   "YES," he replied.  After I told him I needed my receptacles replaced, he showed up at my house in about 20 minutes!

I will take your word for it and not try this at home! I have wondered many times.

P.S. Just love Myrl's comment.. too bad my ex isn't an electrician!
