Finding mold in your home can be an unsettling discovery. Whether or not to remove it is a simple question. However, determining if you should remove it yourself or if you should call a professional sometimes proves more difficult. Below are a few guidelines to help you make that decision.
Can I Remove Mold Myself?
If the mold coverage is less than 3’ x 3’ it can be handled as a DIY project, as long as it is found on a nonporous surface. Painted wood, metal, glass, etc. can be cleaned by following these simple steps:
Step 1: Fix the Source of the Moisture. Mold will return if moisture is not corrected at the source.
Step 2: Do Not Expose Yourself. Wear a mask, long rubber gloves, and goggles.
Step 3: Scrub Surfaces Thoroughly. Using a mix of water and detergent, scrub the moldy surface thoroughly.
Step 4: Bag and Discard Materials Used. Bag and throw away anything that came in contact with the mold during the cleaning process--gloves, towel, etc.
Ultimately, if the moisture issue is not corrected, mold will return. Mold thrives in moisture; therefore, in order to ensure it does not return it is vital to correct any leaks, water damage, and other contributors to moisture in the affected area. Consider running the fan or opening a window when showering, replacing old, drafty windows, and installing whole-house dehumidification.
Do Not Attempt to Remove Mold If…
Porous materials in your home can hide mold spores underneath the surface. Do not attempt to remove mold yourself if it is found on:
- Drywall
- Tile
- Unfinished Wood
- Carpet
- Popcorn or Tile Ceiling
If you spray and wipe the surface you will not be removing the hidden spores, in fact you could make the issue worse. Cleaners may kill the visible mold spores, but because they are water based, they will also leave behind moisture that soaks in and acts as a breeding ground for mold.
