February Is Black History Month. In Chicago we celebrate and take a good look at the African Americans who have helped made our city what it is today. After World War 2 many people, black and white migrated from the South to Chicago because there were so many great union jobs available.
Chicago is the home to Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf in the music world, Michael Jordan you know as one of the best Basketball players of all time just to scratch the surface. The Chicago Park District says:
- The precursor to Black History Month, Negro History Week, was created in 1926 here in Chicago by Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History.
- Umoja (one of our featured events), means Unity, to strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
- 44 Chicago Park District facilities or parks have been named for influential African Americans. Learn more: Read the related press release.
