Can One Have Too Many Decks? Part One...

When I moved here to the Okanagan, BC, I spent the first 6 months renovating the inside of my place. The outside didn't come into play until the next spring.

We have glorious weather here from March until the end of November, for the most part, & outdoor spaces are at a premium. All of my neighbours enjoy the outside with an outdoor space, so I thought that might be a good idea.

I didn't really have any outdoor seating spaces, so I thought I would remedy that with a deck, or three...

Deck one kind of encompasses deck 2 as well, but I'll leave deck two for the next part of this series.

deck 1

My place had a stable cement pad out front that almost fit my car if I wanted to park it there. It didn't cover my car completely so I decided to make it a partially covered deck in 2 parts, with a privacy screen for the daybed I would build later in part two. The carport will be built at a later date for my baby...

I laid down cement blocks to level & support it, used joist hangers, & (with the help of a house warming present from my friends Brian & Judith) bought the decking to finish the floor. (The temporary walkway on the left made sure I didn't break my leg every day during construction.)

Deck one has normal decking, but I want to lay indoor outdoor carpet on deck 2 (that's the plan anyway).

I can now sit outside in the evening or during the day, in sunlight or sheltered. I even have visitors, both human & other.

My neighbours texted me once & told me they were having wine on my deck & it would be nice if I could join them... but I was at work, a 45 minute drive away... :D

Great to see you Peg. I know Sharon had a great time with you a few years back when you were working on the inside of your home.  Is that view from one of your deck sites? If so, wowzer. It looks like a perfect spot to sit at the end of the day with a glass of good wine. D

Thanx Debb! Sharon was going to see you not long after she left my place, she said she had a great time with you!

Yes this is the view of the front of my place, & it is really nice to sit out there enjoying a glass of wine from one of the local vineyards. I am surrounded, by 5 or 6!

3 within walking distance!

And I thought California was the only place for outdoor living most of the year.  Looks nice.

Thanx Anja!

While we don't have the really cold weather that is identified with most of Canada; we do get to freezing & a bit below.

The rest of the time out door living is the norm.

That's why I have more than one deck; it can get close to 40C in the summer, so a covered deck is exactly what one needs on those days!

Retired and loving life

Hi Peg-I remember sitting out on your front deck with the chairs the first day I was there. I love the second deck as well. I remember you made the covers for them. You are much better with a circular saw than I am. I do best with a miter saw. Funny your neighbors enjoy your deck too for their wine. A community deck huh.

Lol, Sharon! Yes i remeber us sitting out there & it wasn't that warm of a day...

My deck has been commadeered more than once in the last year. The last time it was late October & my other neighbour was walking by & said, "meet you on the deck in 10 minutes, I'll bring the wine!" Who can argue with that!?
