Are You Too Old to Teach an Old Dog New Tricks?

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

Part of the reason my enthusiasm for certain challenges is rarely dampened by outside influences is because I am a fairly fearless individual. I will try just about anything within reason. I am not afraid to fail. I suspect it is the fear of failing that hold many people back from trying new things, and that has never applied to me. Perhaps it's because I don't give much of a crap what other people think, unless it's standing in the way of closing a real estate transaction.

So I'm gonna put it out there and ask what you guys think. You can read more about this in my personal blog today at this link: Are You Too Old To Learn a Foreign Language Like Spanish?

I don't think we are ever to old to learn as long as we have our mental faculties intact.

We are two peas in a pod, Elizabeth.  I'm not afraid to fail either.  However, when I try something new, I kind of like to do it alone, so my failures aren't too celebrated by my friends.  This morning, I watched a couple YouTube videos on how to change cabin and air filters in my car, along with the wiper blades.  I was amazed at how simple it was.  It's amazing what a gal can do with a 10 mm ratchet with an extension.

We are two peas in a pod, Myrl. I had to figure out how to fix my tankless water heater by reading online manuals when my plumber flubbed it up.

You're never too old to learn something new.  We may not be excellent at it, but it's still worth a try. It's all about attitude and the desire for knowledge.

I agree. I really want to do this, so I am very motivated. I am tired of not being able to read signs in Spanish.

I used to be fluent in Spanish.  I think your age has less to do with absorbing the language, than your natural ability to learn.  You will be a natural.

That's something I've never wanted to do.  I somehow avoided all foreign language classes in both high school and college.

Good morning Elizabeth.  I took Spanish in college.  Although not fluent I understand words now and then.  Go for it, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Hi Elizabeth -- our attitude and motivation matter a lot more than age in my opinion.

On a separate note, I went to San Felipe about a half dozen times when I lived in San Diego -- I have some nice memories visiting there.

You've probably seen my old house. It's got an extra third floor with a spiral staircase leading to the top, built by accident and takes up two lots. Brick. Villa de las Palmas, I think.

Hi Elizabeth.  I don't think age has anything to do with it unless you are 95.  Good luck.

Elizabeth, I had this silly conversation about being too old to improve my French, and now I'm doing Pimsleur each morning with good results.  Soon I'll be able to converse with all of the Francophiles in my office!

Age doesn't matter unless you a a cheese.

You might check out Transparent Language. I struggled with Pimsleur because audio alone doesn't cut it for me and I can't learn that way. Transparent Language hits all the bases and delivers training for each new word / phrase 8 different ways. Good for you, Pat, for improving your French! Once I get through Spanish, I'll probably opt for French next.
