What Does a Rice Cooker Have to do With Real Estate . . .

What Does a Rice Cooker Have to do With Real Estate . . .

Yesterday, I went to the store and I bought a rice cooker.  It's the first rice cooker I've ever purchased and it's one of those "Why did I wait so long?" DUH moments in my life.

I had the same thing happen with . . . the leaf blower AND the hedge trimmer, but I digress.

The decision to buy a rice cooker was made after burning rice to the bottom of yet, another one of my good pots . . . which I soaked for over a week to try and salvage.

I went to Uwajimaya, an Asian market that's located in Beaverton.  I've shopped at Uwajimaya in Beaverton many times before, especially when I have a yen for delicious Thai sauces, dakon radishes, udon noodles, satay noodles, rice paper, sake, spices and fresh seafood . . . among their other goodies.

I thought Uwajimaya would carry the best rice cooker products.  And they did!

Today I used it and it made FLAWLESS rice.  Absolutely perfect Jasmine rice, cooked in homemade chicken broth.  When the rice was cooked perfectly, the cooker turned OFF.

What does a rice cooker have to do with real estate?

I'll tell you . . .

I thought I was cooking rice "good enough" in my pot.

I thought I knew all about cooking rice and yet . . . I kept burning my good pots.

For what I have paid to REPLACE the pots I've burned over the years, I could have saved money by buying a rice cooker.

No matter how many videos I've watched on cooking rice -- and I've watched plenty, from cooking Persian rice, to making Paella, to New Orleans Gumbo -- I can't get it just right.

Even though the rice cooker is just a kitchen appliance -- what a world of difference having a rice cooker will make.  It will be simpler and a headache free experience.

How about real estate?

Even though I'm just a real estate agent . . . what a world of difference I make to my clients!  I make the transaction simpler and a headache free experience!

When consumers of real estate think they can cook up their own deals . . . it's not as easy as is seems.  It really boils down to knowledge and experience.

Having a real estate agent take care of the details is what any home buyer should be looking for.  They should also be looking for a rice cooker!

I'll leave it up to you to add to the analogy recipe . . .

Cute analogy. But it's good to know how to make rice on the stove too, in case the electricity goes out. In Hawaii it happens.

You run the risk of buring, or I guess in real estate being burned if you go it on your own.

Carla, when my wife and I moved to India to work one of the first things we bought was a rice cooker. So, I understand well your analogy. Sometimes there is a better and more productive way of doing things. We just need to get past thinking we already know everything.

Thanks for a great post.

Carla,  Boiling, burning, cooking up rice and real estate deals. We all need the right tools to get the job done. Buyers need a agent that knows how to cook up a perfect real estate transaction.  Okay ... maybe "perfect" is pushing it because we all know ... stuff happens.

What a fun read.  Now I want rice ... thank you very much

When there is a task, whether it's making rice, or buying and selling real estate, having good tools is essential.  That goes for having a good rice cooker, or the best real estate agent you can find.

I tossed one not long ago.  I bought it but never used it.   But I did have a client text me this week and tell me "your job sucks".  When I asked why her reply was all the stress of every client (like her) must be maddening.  I let her know I can handle that kind of stress.

My rice cooker can handle it now too!  No more burned pots!  No stress for me, LOL

Carla - I don't think our family could live without a rice cooker. We have been using it for over 25 years, and it is still going strong. Heck, even my son and I can put on a pot of rice and cook it just right with the rice cooker.

Carla, Anyone thinking of buying a home should hire you to be their buyer agent. We eat rice every day and remember the days years ago when I did not have a rice cooker . Sometimes the rice would be over cooked and sometimes not cooked enough.

While I do appreciate your analogy, I also appreciated hearing about your rice cooker experience. Elevation is my issue with cooking rice. I might have to buy one of those darn cookers. And I've had that same feeling you did with using your rice cooker when I got a leaf blower. DUH...what took me so long to buy this darn thing.

Mar 29, 2016 09:09 AM

Debbie Laity it's an amazing kitchen appliance.  It cooks brown rice, which takes longer, to perfection.  Not sure how it does its thang . . . just flip the "on" switch and that's it.  No temp to set, nothing!  I suppose I can Google who it works, but the child in me wants to STILL believe in magic.  The magical rice cooker -- I'm happy!!
