Laughter is the Best Medicine!

Remember that old saying that ‘laughter is the best medicine’?   Well, according to researchers it’s true.  Although we certainly need medicine, just 1 minute of hearty laughter can reduce heart rate, increase blood flow, positively affect blood sugar levels, boost immune function, help us relax, sleep better and improve our overall sense of wellbeing! Wow!

We see and hear every day about natural disasters, terrorism, crime, abuse and other horrible things.  This can rob us from appreciating the good things and people in our lives.  With all the fear and turmoil in our world today, it’s no wonder that we don’t feel as happy and content as we should.  And if left ‘unchecked’, research shows that it can cause stress and medical problems.

How about if we all ‘prescribed’ laughter, like doctors prescribe medicine?  We wouldn’t even have to stop at the drug store to pick it up and it’s FREE!  Good feelings are in all of us and a friendly smile, a kind word, and of course, a good laugh bring it out.

Since you’re already reading this article, why don’t you take a moment to think of the people who make you laugh and smile.  Don’t you look forward to being around them?  How about the ‘life of the party’ or the great joke and story teller?  We know that no one is exempt from life’s problems, but to spread and share laughter every day sounds like very good medicine to me.

Now, who has a good joke?

Laughter truly is the best medicine! I appreciate those times I've wanted to cry in frustration and instead found the humor and carried on with a lighter heart.

You are so right, Barb. I love this post. Some very dear friends of ours reminded us to limit our intake of sad/bad information each day and watch a lot of comedy. Makes sense to me. D

Good morning Barb Kelley ,  I would rather be around a positive person than a negative one.  You're right about stress.  Here are a couple one's for you!

Dirty joke:  Boy fell in a mud puddle.

Clean Joke:  Boy went home and took a shower.

I'm sure that must have been something I heard when I was very young.  We thought they were the pinacle of jokes back then, but it helped develop our personalities and our health.

I've never been a good joke teller, but love to be around happy, jovial people. Laughter is indeed the best medicine and is good for the soul as well.

Hi Barb Kelley

I loved reading this post and totally agree with you that laughter is the best medicine. Believing the glass is half full vs. half empty is a positive way to live your life and healthier too. Love your profile picture with your beautiful dog!

I like the message you're spreading. Sometimes it's a challenge to find something to laugh at - perhaps we should all start laughing at ourselves more often and quit trying to be perfect. There is no human being perfect.
