A few years ago, I was at a marketing strategy session with the owner of a restaurant group who is a client of ours. He told me he wanted to run a special dinner where he taught his diners how to make his signature dishes.
His manager looked at him like he was nuts.
“Why the hell would you give away your secret recipe to everyone?” she asked.
“It’s simple,” he said. “Not everyone likes to cook. And nobody does it as well as I do.”
There was a tremendous lesson in this.
A few weeks later, he saw the footage and pictures we shot at the event.
“My God,” he said. “That’s an incredible camera.”
You’ve got to be kidding me. He’s complimenting my gear?
“Hey,” I said. “Next time you cook a kick ass dish that you’ve slaved over for hours…I’ll point out what a great oven you have.”
Talent. It’s only as good as the hustle to use it.
Ideas. They’re only as good as your ability to execute on them.
So I’m putting my money where my mouth is. I’m taking a guy who many believe to be a competitor on the road with me this coming Tuesday.
Here’s the thing. He’s a massively talented guy and he’s got a great company. I like him personally and I respect him professionally. So when he asked if he could shadow me on the road Tuesday to learn from me, I graciously accepted what I felt was his very flattering offer.
A friend thought he was calling me on a bluff yesterday.
“You just believe in keeping your friends close and your enemies closer.”
I’m putting that guy in his place.
I’m starting the day at 5am Tuesday and once he arrives for the day, I’m handing over access to my Facebook (my personal page, my public figure page and my business page) along with our Twitter account and Instagram account. But the biggest leap of faith for me? My Snapchat. He'll have complete control of it until we get off the road at about 10pm.
For those of you who have been following me for some time now, you know how massively bullish I am about Snapchat this year. Every day during the week, I bring our followers behind-the-scenes on our show “A Day In The Life Of An Entrepreneur”. It’s insanely real, uncensored, unfiltered and no B.S. picture and video shorts (10 second clips all throughout the day).
So when we hit the road Tuesday, I’m handing over the keys to the kingdom. I’ll have HIM run "A Day In The Life Of An Entrepreneur” for the day. Unscripted. Uncensored. Unfiltered. This should be good…but it’s also possible this will massively explode in my face. I guess we’ll find out.
Sometimes you have to take chances in marketing. We win some, we lose some. But knowing that not everyone likes to cook…I hope this will turn out to be a spectacular dish.
Are you going to follow us? Perhaps this is what you need to finally bite the bullet and get on Snapchat. And in case you missed it - here's why you should be on there to begin with.
