Wanna See Ronald Reagan's Former Home in East Sacramento?

ronald reagan's residence in east sacramento 1341 45th Avenue Fab 40sAh, I remember it like it was yesterday. But it happened in 1967. When the news reported that Nancy Reagan declared the Governor's Mansion a "fire trap" and that she refused to live there, tongues lashed out, calling her a snob. Why, the Governor's Mansion, built in 1877 and purchased by the State in 1903, was good enough for 12 California governors, and many critics viewed Mrs. Reagan's snub as elitist.

Ronald and Nancy Reagan moved into a $1,200 a month rental in East Sacramento, located at 1341 45th Street, in an exclusive area called the Fabulous 40s. Many newspapers of that era called the neighborhood a "suburb" of downtown Sacramento, although it's located a couple dozen blocks away from the Governor's Mansion. This is a photo of that home in East Sacramento. The Reagans lived in this home from 1967 to 1975.

Although the Governor's Mansion has been restored and is now open for visitor tours, the home in East Sacramento is owned by a private party, having last sold in 2000 for $1,765,000. Like many East Sacramento homes, especially those in the Fab 40s, this residence is spectacular. It consists of 12 rooms, 7,108 square feet and is situated on more than half an acre.

Looks like a beautiful home...  12 rooms, 7,000+ square feet and home to a former Pres.  1.7MM was a steal.  What do you think the value is today?

Well, Fran, you could say that some homes in the Fab 40s of East Sacramento sell for more than $500 a square foot.

I didn't have time to take the tour the first time around... Those are some beautiful homes, Elizabeth.  Given some of the prices 3.5MM doesn't sound all that bad.

Love it. I don't think Nancy was a snob. She just wasn't diplomatic.

Hi Jesse: Glad you liked the tour. It was such a lovely spring day on Sunday, and the first bloom for roses in Sacramento is a much anticipated event for me. It's like seeing the first Robin in Minnesota. It's like spring bursts into color and suddenly arrives. So, I decided to drive around East Sacramento and shoot photos of my favorite homes, dig up a little history on each and make a photo gallery. You can get a lot of space and a beautiful home for under $600,000 in East Sacramento, but even the million-dollar-plus homes are a bargain as compared to other areas. It's so close to downtown, too, which makes commutes very convenient. If you were so inclined, you could walk downtown, and it's less than a mile to Midtown.

So, did you like the goose at the end? Don't ask how me how I got that photo, because my camera malfunctioned -- I didn't change the photo since it looked so cool.

Karen: In all fairness to Nancy Reagan, the fire department did say the Governor's Mansion was unsafe.

This is certainly a dream house.  I want to call it a doll house, but I'm not sure I've ever heard of a 7,000+ sq ft doll house!

Yes, Scott. Although East Sacramento is affordable as compared to other areas in California, it does strike out-of-area buyers as astronomically high per square foot. Like with most places, though, you pay for location. This is considered relatively inexpensive for what you get. Hey, what do you want for a former Governor's (US President) residence, huh?

Hi Natalie: It's still gingerbread to me, so don't feel bad.

I did... I thought it was a stock photo.  That was a great capture.  I'm waiting on the snow to melt before I start taking spring pictures.  That darn white stuff is actually falling right now.

Not that the Reagan house isn't beautiful but 641 45th & 1017 44th were my favorites.

Hi Laura: Something many Sacramentans do is swarm the Fab 40s on Sundays, looking for open houses. They're not in the market to buy; it's just a fun activity. Kinda like watching HGTV.

Hi Jesse: LOL. I have no idea why the background was black and that goose was so white.

I guess it's hard to shoot photographs when everything is white for miles and miles. When I lived in Minneapolis, experts recommended leaving dead plants to winter over just so we'd have something to look at poking up out of the snow.

My favorite is 1330 45th -- the yellow brick home. But there are so many great East Sacramento homes to choose from; it's hard to single out a "best" choice.

Great house!  I love this area of Sacramento.  I understand it is one of the few areas keeping its value.  I love a good Sunday drive through the fab 40's.

You're right. It's one of several areas in Sacramento that are somewhat unaffected by the declining market. I know buyers find it hard to believe that some areas are receiving multiple offers and buyers are fighting over inventory, but it is happening. The news seems to pick up on over-saturated neighborhoods like Elk Grove or those areas that have been further depressed such as north Sacramento or Oak Park, and those ae the stories that make the headlines. Not the hot markets. And there ARE hot seller's markets in Sacramento, believe it or not.

Well, at least I'm not working with those who can't read neighborhood stats, thank goodness.
