Last September my husband, son and I went to Italy. We flew directly into Palermo, Sicily, and after a quick hello to family, we were heading up to Milano for a Formula One race (car lovers, that could be another blog). We took a ferry, that transported us and our car up north, that was 20 hours on water, and I got very sea sick. I was glad to be on sold ground, and once we learned The Word Fair Expo was being hosted in Milano, I knew we were destine to go.
The theme of the 2015 World EXPO was "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life." The EXPO aimed to educate awareness and participation in the availability of food that is healthy, safe and sufficient; and for the environment, economic and social sustainability of the food chain, while preserving taste and food culture.
The exposition site was almost 300 acres and had more than 20 million visitors during its 6 month span, from May 1-October 31 2015.
Countries from around the wold set up displays and interactive buildings that exemplified the theme. The US showed how they have irrigation systems to grow food on the sides of buildings. Some countries showed how they grew materials to make shelters. Some showed how they grew beans and grains to provide nutrition and feed the hungry. Brazil's exhibit featured a net of ropes, you could walk over while seeing containers of garden plants below.
The United Kingdom, created an abstract pavilion leading up to a beehive, where it showed bees and their importance to make honey for food. They used lights and humming noises that came from an actual beehive in England.
Many of the exhibits had long lines and a 2 hour wait, but well worth it for this one in a lifetime event. So many of the buildings were so detailed and involved it was hard to believe they were only temporary and would be removed. Many of the visitors thought it should remain as part of the landscape.
In the center of the many buildings stood the Tree Of Life,
that lit up and played music in the evening.
There were many places to eat. Some of the countries had stands with foods typical of their culture. There was also an "Eataly", similar to NYC, with different Italian foods from different regions of Italy.
In summary, the World EXPO is a place where every corner of the world comes together to display their culture, traditions, and flavors among extraordinary architecture. Last year Italy did not dissapoint with the food and wine tasting!
The World Expo takes place ever 5 years, and the next one is scheduled for Dubai in 2020!
