I'm sharing a story from my book, Are You Ready for Commercial Real Estate. I had fun writing it and this particular intro into the financial chapter humored me. I hope you enjoy.
I once told a Finance Professor, Prof. Kadapakkam (Prof. K) Business Finance is not my strong suit. I requested favor that he not call on me in class. I promised, in return, that I would always do my homework and would show it to him before each class.
Prof. K responded, “May I ask what is your concentration?” I answered, “Marketing Strategy.” Prof. K. said, “Don’t you think that in Marketing you have to deal with budgets?” To which I politely replied, “Well of course, but I’m interested in Consumer Behavior not budgets.” Prof. K said, “Quite frankly I’m not really sure why you are getting an MBA if you don’t want to master Business Finance. Cathy, the core of business is to make money, and if you don’t want to know how to measure it then perhaps you shouldn’t get an MBA.” Wow! That hit me pretty hard. From that day forward Prof. K called on me every single class to give an answer.
