It's Like a Dog Pissing on a Fire Hydrant

People can be so territorial.  In some ways, being protective can be a good thing, like when neighbors put up fences to keep their pets and children safe within their own yard.  There's nothing offensive about that.

I live in a small town where people are still kind and civil to one another.  It's like the good ole' days when neighbors shared milk and sugar over the fence post.  Yep, those were happy days.  However, even in a small town, people can act like dogs pissing on a fire hydrant, staking their claim and protecting their territory.

Recently, I procured a sizeable sale in the next County over.  As part of my due diligence, I called my 'local' Title Company to request a profile of the property, which includes basic tax info, plat map, aerial photo, etc.  The Title Co. I typically use (who is always so helpful) explained they didn't have access to the tax information in the next County over, so they encouraged me to call the Title Co. located in that small town, which I did.

The next call went like this... Hi, my name is Melinda and I'm a Broker with Real Estate Cafe and I'd like to request a Property Profile for ....   The gal responded, "We don't provide that information to 'outside' companies."  Huh?  Then I asked... "May I pay for the profile?" The response again was "No."  Finally, I asked... "If I open escrow with your company, would you provide the information then?"  She said yes.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to me, the Manager of my friendly, neighborly, local Title Co. (the one I typically do business with) also placed a courtesy call to the 'other' Title Co. and requested to speak with the Manager to ask for a property profile on my behalf.  The 'other' Manager said... "it's our sandbox, and we don't have to play nice... we're the only game in town... and that's that" (paraphrase).  I guess his answer was a big fat "No" with an exclamation point!

In that moment, I remembered a movie, Miracle on 34th Street, and the part where Kris Kringle (Santa) was so helpful in referring Macy's customers to other stores to find certain products that Macy's didn't have (who doesn't love a helpful Santa?).  Macy's ultimately turned Santa's goodwill efforts into a wonderful marketing campaign... "If we don't have it, we'll find it for you."

Seems to me... the Manager of the 'other' Title Co. should stop pissing on his fire hydrant and take a cue from Santa and my friendly, neighborly, local Title Co.  Just sayin' ;-)

Funny thing is... that 'little world' has expansive views of the Pacific Ocean.  It's literally a beautiful town Gary ;-)

I've never understood the territorial mindset... except when it's a doting parent or a lover (wink, wink)...then I get it Marte ;-)

Thank you kindly Patricia!  Nice to see you sweetie ;-)

It's probably something in the water in this neck of the woods Melissa ;-)

Little ole you... Endre?!  I think not ;-)  The only BIG box Title Co. was First American and they closed their doors in that town a few months ago.  Now, the only game in town is the local yocals ;-/

Thank you Michael ;-)

So true... Missy poo... the dog part that is ;-)  Nice to see you Gayle!

That's exactly how it should be... Jill.  That's the kind of thing that warms my heart ;-)

Good morning Melinda.  thankfully that doesn't happen around here, or at least I haven't heard of it, the backlash would put them out of business.

Melinda (Mel) Peterson We have those issues popping up constantly in both our market areas and we just learn to work around these people and never use them, nor promote their listings, if real estate agents. Let them stew in their own sauce. I find these people are reacting to a negative trend in their business and with these attitudes, it only worsens.

Mel, Territorial ... and rude and unprofessional. There is far too much pissing going on in the world in general and in the world of real estate. Who wants to do business with jackholes like that?

Awww... thanks Jack!

My pleasure... Christopher!

Good afternoon James!  Thankfully, I haven't encountered this kind of 'tude' on a regular basis in my neck of the woods either ;-)

"Let them stew in their own sauce."   Love it Sandy & Norm!

Glad you stopped by Raymond!

Wow indeed!  Thanks Kathryn ;-)

I hear ya Kathleen!  Can't everyone just play nice?!!!

Thanks for your comment Bob.  It's surprising to me too that a Title Co. wouldn't want to assist a REALTOR, in providing basic tax info, knowing that by doing so, it could've resulted in a potential escrow.

I'm glad that Pat featured this one.  I would have missed it otherwise.  That is definitely poor business sense on the part of the title company.

Wow Mel! Lack of common courtesy could mean a big loss of potential business for that company. I am definitely shaking my head on this one!

Hello Melinda:  Wow what an interesting story.  Sad to believe people in business would treat "prospective clientele with such abrasiveness" -- but your example of "Miracle on 34th Street" says it all.  Lesson Learned ...

Hey, KS. I came looking for you to see if you were still around. So good to see you and your wonderful blog post.

It sounds like a new Title Company with an idea of what Customer Service is might just make a go of it in that little town.
