Cultural Activities Near Boca Raton - Norton Museum of ArtWhen you're living in Boca Raton, there's never a shortage of cultural activities from which to choose. This time out, I'd like to direct your attention and your GPS to The Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida.

As of February 18th and running through May 15, 2016, the Norton is presenting an exhibition that details the art and careers of modernists Marguerite ZorachFlorine StettheimerHelen Torr and Georgia O’Keeffe. It is well worth the trip; not only for the pleasure of seeing the works of these artists, but because the Norton is such a beautifully designed building.

A Closer Look
Of the four artist highlighted in this exhibition, Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) is the most well-known. O’Keeffe is known for being one of the original artists in the American Modernism movement. Her distinct flowers and landscapes of the southwestern U.S. are iconic. Marguarite Zorach (1887-1968) is known for her textile art, embroideries that resembled her earlier paintings. Florine Stettheimer (1871-1944) was not only a painter but a designer as well as a poet. She is best known for her set designs that were made of cellophane. Helen Torr (1886-1967) was also an early American Modernist. Her media was paint she is known for her landscapes that were inspired by Long Island’s North Shore.

About the Exhibit
This is the first time these four female artists’ work have been displayed together. The commonality with all four women was their desire to be recognized as true artists not just ‘female artists’. The exhibition will explore how their gender played a role not only in the art itself but how the images where interpreted during their lifetime and in the present.

Evening Activity at the Norton

The Norton also offers an “Art After Dark” program, which combines culture and entertainment. Visitors may be entertained by music of many varieties, converse with curators, or tour exhibits with docents. There are also films, dances, culinary demonstrations, and various other art related activities, all of which are included in the price of admission on that day.

About the Norton Museum
The Norton Museum of Art was founded by Ralph Hubbard Norton and his wife Elizabeth Calhoun Norton in 1941. The Nortons had a large collection of paintings and sculptures that they had accumulated over their may years of as renowned patrons of and collectors of art from all over the world. While they spent some of the year in their home in  Chicago, Illinois, they preferred spending their winters in Palm Beach. (Is there anyone who doesn't)?

They decided to share their art collection with the public and in 1941 the Nortons opened the museum in West Palm Beach.  Since then, the collection has continued to grow. It currently consists of over 7,000 works that range from the ancient to the contemporary and encompass paintings, sculpture, and photography from American, Chinese, and European artists.

The Norton Museum of Art is located at 1451 S Olive Ave, West Palm Beach, FL 33401
