Finding Places in Richmond Virginia To Enjoy the Great Outdoors With Your Family!

Winter’s winding down and you can almost taste spring in the air. Your kids have been climbing the walls for weeks and you feel the walls closing in on you. The weather has warmed up a little and there are some buds and green shoots poking their little heads out at the world. It’s time to get out and discover the great outdoors of Richmond, Virginia.

WJLP_sproutsjpg.jpgith over 100 parks in the Richmond area, you will find a park to visit that has exactly what you’re looking for. Almost all of the parks have great walking and bike trails, picnic areas with shelters, tables and grills, and open game areas. Sprawling state parks feature horseback trails, fishing piers, lakes and overnight campgrounds. You can find lighted basketball or tennis courts and even rope swings.

While it is still a little cool out, there is no reason why you can’t get out and enjoy yourselves. Bundle up in coats and hats, pull out the bikes, fishing poles, basketball or Frisbee, pack a ready-to-eat lunch or get something to throw on the barbie!

Plan a scavenger hunt as you walk on one of the many trails. Make a list of items you don’t actually have to pickup or remove, keeping things natural. The first one to spot a pinecone, a bird’s nest in a tree, a mushroom on the ground or fungus growing on a tree. Make the walk an adventure for everyone! By the time you get back to your picnic table, everyone will be hungry and ready to eat.

Most parks have grills readily available to use, just add charcoal and grill your favorite outdoor food. And not just hot dogs or hamburgers. Why not enjoy something new and different, like a cast iron pot of chili or stew, foil packets pre-filled with your favorite meat and vegiXHR_campfire896196180jpg_crop_1456504908.jpge mix, or fry up some bacon, eggs and pancakes! Use your imagination! It may take a little work on your part, but everyone will enjoy the meal and remember it for a long time after!

If the rustic side is not to your liking, visit one of the many Richmond area gardens, like the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, Agecroft and the Maymont gardens. While there may not be very much new growth, winter gardens have their own unique form of beauty and at this time of year new growth might possibly be seen, adding a needed touch of green to your day! Fountains and water features add another aspect to the scenery. Many of the gardens have eating facilities located on the premises, or stop somewhere you all enjoy and have dinner before going home.

Whatever you decide to do, the outdoor time will refresh and invigorate everyone! And a side benefit may be a really good night’s sleep for all of you!
