The Moment You Lost The Sale

My idiot darling son totaled his car. He's fine! Just youthful crazy taking it's toll. He was driving a few kids back to college after a debate team event. It was dark and instead of driving to the stop sign and turning up the road....all those nice paved roads....he took a turn across the hypotenuse through a field. All this in rural Illinois and low and behold, there was a ditch. Boom!

Now that I have the amount of money that my insurance company is giving me for the car, I've been car shopping.

I'll admit that I'm tempted to buy the lime green Kia Soul or the purple Toyota Corolla, but I'm resisting. Kids do silly things and this is just one of those moments our parents warned us about. Sigh.

Last night I went to a car lot (ack) and walked through the used car section. I was approached immediately by a "sales"man. I let him ramble about who he was to the dealership, some kind of portfolio something-or-other, and then I wanted to talk about what I needed.

A sentence or so in, I was cut off for more information about what he had in stock. Interrupted and directed to information that I did not need and did not pertain to my needs.

THAT was the moment you lost the sale....just in case he was wondering.

Good afternoon Karen,

So many vehicle salespeople never learn the two ears one mouth syndrome and never realize why!

The good thing was nobody was hurt and it lowered the percentage of that type of vehicle still being on the road ten years later.

Good luck with the replacement.

Make yourself an astonishing day.

I couldn't agree more...but I wish his car was going to be on the road. It was a relatively new Honda with great gas mileage.

Dumb indeed.  It doesn't matter what biz you're in.  It's about listening to your customers and solving their needs, not pushing what you have or want them to buy.

Karen,  I literally put my hands on the shoulder of a "sales" man, looked him right in the eyes and said, "I need you to stop talking and focus on why you are here." Then I excused myself ...went outside a took a walk to clam myself. I really wanted to smack him along side the head and yell SHUT THE BLANK UP!!!!

I should note that he was "up selling" all new windows when he was asked to estimate the cost of replacing only two windows.

Evidently, that's not a sales person who understands he has two ears so he can listen twice as much as he talks. He would have lost me also. I like Kathleen's comment - I would have wanted to smack him also.

MR. CRAPPY DOES NOT LIKE CHEESY SALES PEOPLE. We are sorry to hear that the car was totalled ... yet hap-hap-happy that no one was hurt.

Overly aggressive (pushy) sales people seldom get past the 2nd sentence with me Karen Fiddler, Broker/Owner  . I was tempted to buy my daughter a Smart car so she could only have one passenger at a time.

He probably isn't even wondering about the lost sale, Karen; not curious to learn how he could do better. Some people simply don't listen--ever.

Karen Fiddler, Broker/Owner ~ hi Karen, at least your son is ok. Amazingly enough I've also seen people in our profession do the same as this car salesman. A lesson here to be learned by all of us who are in sales.

Karen- first of all, glad your son and friends were not hurt!!  It reminds me of when Larry's daughter turned a corner too sharply (I'm sure aided by some liquid fun) and ruined both of the new tires we'd just purchased.

As for the salesman.... he has not learned an important trait to selling and that is to listen with your ears not your mouth!  Let us know what car you end up with.

I am very sad to say that some of my Agents talk too much also.  I tell them less is more but they always think I'm speaking about someone else.  Lord have mercy.

Karen I so get it!  When I was shopping for a new mattress I couldn't believe the stuff that came out of ones guys mouth. Nothing I wanted or cared to know about - I was out of there fast.

I was in a dealership recently and the salesperson lost the sale when he handed me a card to call him to set up a test drive.  Meanwhile, he had been on a personal call when I approached.  He got back on the phone with his girl.  Done with him.

I am so glad no one was injured...still, what a pain.  My husband bought a new car a couple of years ago and had such a great experience, he took me to the dealership a few days later and I also bought a new car from the same guy.  I sent him a thank you note and a couple of restaurant gift cards - it was such a breath of fresh air to finally come across someone who "gets" it.

One mouth, two ears was the best piece of advice that my mentor/broker every said to me. He simply said "one mouth/two ears" and stopped talking.  I got it.

I sometimes think those of us who deal in sales are truly jaded when it comes to those who try to sell to us.  I remember a few years back I went into the dealership with a certain Toyota Camry in mind.  However, once there, I saw a Camry  which had more options, and was in my favorite color.  When I began looking at the car more closely, the salesman said, "You 'deserve' this car!" Right away, that word "deserve" stuck me as a salesman trying to work his magic on me, and it backfired.  I ended up buying that car. . .but not from THAT salesman!

We're in the customer service business and we recognize it when we don't get it. I think used car salesman are just below us as real estate agents. But that is not an excuse not to give excellent customer service.
