The 2015 harvest Napa County's grape value was up 6% but the amount of grapes grown declined 29% compared to 2014. The average price per ton for Napa County grapes $4,328, the highest in California.
In case you wonder what the average price per ton fetches here for some popular grapes :
Cabernet sauvignon $6,319, I have heard the top dollar is around $12,000 per ton
Chardonnay $2,595
Sauvignon blanc $2,011
Merlot $3,145
With typical Cabernet sauvignon production here of only about 4 tons per acre and the fact you get 700 bottles +/- per ton, it is easy to understand why there are so many $50-100 wines out there. Remember most of the better Cabernets are aged minimum two years and almost all the elite premium four years.
