DEVELOP A TIME STRATEGY BASED ON GOALS AND VALUES

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

Time management is not a time management issue at all.

When I ask my business owners in Westchester County New York most of them tell me that time management is one of the top challenges. If we all have 24 hours in a day and a calendar system to use why would this be a top challenge?

Time Strategies

Time management is not simply achieved by having an organized system.    There are many books that tell you how to organize your time. You can buy a day planner, or use programs such as Outlook, ACT, or another software program but still have no better control of your day. Managing time is not a tactic but it is a strategy.  The root cause of the problem is not the lack of systems or processes. The root cause is our own attitudes about time along with our bad habits and our bad behaviors.

It is a fact that you only have a finite amount of time. That is not true with most other things. It is not true of money. If you waste money you can usually earn it back. A downturn in the stock market will eventually be followed by a higher gain. Most people understand the importance of money and have respect for its value. They don’t like to waste money and they strive to invest money wisely. But the attitude most people have about time is rather carefree as opposed to money. Unlike money you cannot get back your lost time.

So time is really your most precious commodity. Shouldn’t we start treating it that way? I believe that almost everyone knows that you should complete your most urgent, important and critical tasks every day. Almost everyone knows that planning your day makes more sense than letting others do it for you. Everyone knows, but very few do…Why?

To answer that question start with defining your purpose. How you use your time is driven by your vision and values. What really matters to you and what is your purpose, your vision, your values? Why are these things important to you? You need to understand your why first.   We call the why GOALS. What are your goals this year? This month? This week? Today? What do you want to change in your daily routine and how will that change make your life better?

Goal

Now that you have set your purpose driven goals you can set action steps for a time management strategy. You must not procrastinate because that will waste a valuable resource that you cannot replace. Set goals for your week and your day.

Of course, you should take full advantage of any system or program the helps you manage your time. Now that you have established your why these systems will show you how.

You can get organized and get it all done. Time management is not a time management issue!

I have a plan for each day, Must do's and Should do's. On the Must do's my least favorite tasks are first - calls and notes. The rest unfolds pretty organically.  I often have time for some should's.

Hi Grant Schneider ,  Let's se if I have this right. 8 hours for sleep, 1 hour for breakfast coffee, 2.5 hours for lunch and dinner. .5 hours Bathroom and shower. 2 hours for Active Rain. That leaves me 10 hours for everything else.  That sounds doable, Everyone has to fit into my 10 hours now, not including unscheduled phone calls, going to the store, getting gas, shoveling snow or cutting the grass and all my other surprises. ......Yep, I can handle it!

I have to agree with you about attitudes, bad habits and bad behaviors. Bad breeds more bad and just when you think it's bad enough, things get worse!

As I read this, I started thinking about the good old Franklin Planner. The nice and very expensive book I carried around with me with my written down goals and schedules. Just when I got it mastered, I ditched it for the Cell Phone and of course, Cell Phones get lost, stolen, and hijacked too. Personally, I like to have things written down. Time Management has to work for the individual and like baseball, you have to practice it everyday to hit a home run and not call FOUL PLAY or blame others!

Hi Grant,
Great post! I think that so many realtors are late because they will try to sneak in one more task before going on an appointment.  Make your clients your priority and be there EARLY!  Show them that you didn't want to be late.

Hi Patricia - glad you liked my post.  I am glad to provide new ideas.

Hi Larry - yep you can do it.  I love your description because you have many temptations like all of us to get off track.

Lisa - I think that is an accurate statement.

Endre - you are right that is one of the few things.

Patricia - I had a pocket planner for years with the same info you had.  I finally canceled my order and have everything on my phone.

Wayne and Jean - I think you are absolutely right and it does not apply just to realtors.
