Public Speaking And Growing Your Business

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with The Silent Partner Marketing

Public speaking - the key to growing your business.Public speaking.  It's something that sends chills down the spines of countless people.  And yet it's something that can be so massively powerful to build your business.

I tell each and every one of our clients that you need to become a subject matter expert to effectively grow your brand.  Whether you're a real estate agent, a mortgage broker, a banker, an attorney or something else entirely...if you want to effectively build a brand around yourself, you need to showcase your expertise.

So for those of you who are considering anything from launching a speaking circuit to running seminars for first time homebuyers - I want to leave you with a few tips.

1.  Don't picture the audience in their underwear.  It's a pretty common recommendation.  But the reality of it is that whether you have massively unattractive or wildly attractive people in the audience...it will be a distraction for you.  Instead, picture the audience members as people you're sitting and having a beer with.  Be fun.  Be conversational.  Be real.  Share stories.  Share failures.  Give them something to be excited about.

2.  Push for engagement.  The worst thing that could happen when you're speaking is that you lose the attention of the audience.  Ask them to do things.  Jot down a thought.  Raise their hand.  Disagree with you.  Ask questions.  Keep them engaged and you can deliver your most important points with ease.

3.  Provide info-tainment.  It's up to you - as the speaker - to provide your audience with a disproportionate amount of value.  But do it in a way that's entertaining and that connects with them.  You're not there to sell them something.  You're there to give them nuggets that will positively impact their lives.  Do it in an entertaining way and you win.

I've got about three dozen keynotes coming up - so hopefully some of us will cross paths.  My staff put together a little clip in advance of my Times Square keynote - so I'd LOVE your thoughts on it!

I actually really enjoy public speaking.  I have done this on a smaller scale at real estate brokerages and I have been a speaker and panelist for others.  However, for my biz, no I don't see public speaking as a big win/good use of my time.  But, targeted speaking to realtors definitely is.

As a former broadcaster who did a ton of public speaking, it still makes me nervous. However, if passion powers the speaking - and the speaker is well-prepared, it's all gonna work out fine. ;)  Looking to become the expert in these parts about the need to reconnect with nature at our homes ( think retreats), and the wonderful option of multi-generational living and lifestyles.

Hello Kyle, I don't mind public speaking. What I really enjoy is teaching and of course, that involves public speaking. I held a seminar a few Saturdays back and had 8 participants. I was very happy with the results. I was comfortable, I engaged the audience, they were receptive and I got good feedback. I even got a listing appointment!

Very good advice.  Public speaking can be daunting.  It sounds easy and then you get up there with 100 eyes staring at you and your legs become jelly.

Kyle, I took a Public Speaking class in college, that's where I learned I had a NY accent. Then I learned to correct it. Being able to speak and carry oneself in front of an audience is important. Your video is strong, entertaining and captivating, you show an ease of speaking publicly.

Hi Kyle,

I have given many speeches and I found my self not being nervous because I knew my topic ( be well prepared) and I have passion ( I love the topic and truly wanted to share my enthusiasm for it ) and I always felt I was doing something beneficial by sharing my knowledge and my own sense of well being and for all who listened to me , to join me with the same results.

I agree with all your points and would encourage all real estate professionals to   give their own personal anecdotes and successes and failures to strenghten others. I love talking in front of group but I will be always be prepared for the topic. Of course some topics I already have 27 years experience with and with a few bullets points to remind myself to not hog the air, makes it way more powerful. Say less better and talk with a smile.

Public speaking really is just a matter of preparing, I started early and it doesn't bother me at all.

My advice when speaking

You cannot break anything.

You cannot get fired.

No one is listening anyway.

So just have fun and enjoy!

I was asked by my branch manager if I would like to do his radio show when he had other commitments. The thought scared me to death and I said no. Fast forward to last fall. Regina Lockwood of Ferrari-Lund Real Estate was offered a radio show on a local station. I knew I had to do the show, or risk another lender offering to co-host. It was one of the best decisions I ever made! On top of our weekly half hour show, we now do down payment assistance workshops with a studio audience every third week. We have 16 events scheduled for 2016. I was forced out of my comfort zone. Regarding Kyle’s first point, I have the mindset that we are sitting at the kitchen table with friends. We laugh and have fun. Having to prepare for the show makes us better at our jobs.

Public speaking - one of the hardest things there is to do. It pays to be hungry and to know your submect matter. Preparation. Preparation. Preparation.
