Our famous Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch opened today, March 1, although it’s a bit early to see how beautiful the fields will actually be. For my money, I’d wait a few weeks until they are in full bloom before visiting.

The Flower Fields have been a popular Carlsbad tourist attraction for 60+ years, offering 50 acres of extraordinary color. It’s always interesting to see the transformation of a brown dirt hillside to acres of green to the vibrant colors of the Ranunculas, and then back again each year.

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are open for a limited time each year, usually from March 1 until Mother’s Day (May 8th this year). It’s an opportunity to see an amazing collection of flowers on a hillside overlooking the ocean, as well as other floral displays.
Here’s a hint of what you can enjoy at The Carlsbad Flower Fields:
- Historic Poinsettia exhibition with 1500 plants
- Sweet pea maze
- Attend special events like Red Hat Day, Kids Day, live bands on various days, and the special Mother’s Day Celebration on Closing Day, May 8th
- School tours and programs
- An American Flag of flowers blooming on the south side of the fields along Palomar Airport Road
Take to the fields on foot, or hop on the antique tractor wagon ride to really appreciate the beauty of The Flower Fields.
The Carlsbad Flower Fields are readily visible from the I-5 Freeway and are easy to spot looking eastward, at the Palomar Road Exit at 5704 Paseo del Norte (look for the windmill) adjacent to the Carlsbad Premium Outlets Mall.
I particularly like the vantage point looking down on the fields from Armada Drive, with the Carlsbad windmill and 180 degree views of the ocean (off Palomar Airport Road just to the east or from Cannon to the South). And it’s free!
