To get the best out of your kitchen, the lighting scheme should accommodate the many activities that takes place. To do so, careful consideration is required for appropriate light selection and design.

So how do you select appropriate lighting for a kitchen?

With layered lighting.

What is layered lighting?

Layered lighting is a combination of: task, ambient (general) and accent lighting to create a visually comfortable and cohesive environment.

Lets break down layered lighting, so that everyone can apply these techniques that the experts use in model homes.

Task lighting – directs light to specific areas: e.g stove top, food preparation and food storage areas. Task lighting also helps to create separate zones within a kitchen.

Examples of task lighting: under cabinet light, overhead pendant light and over range lighting. These lighting can create a beautiful effect especially when turned on at night.

Ambient (general) lighting – is one main central light. This is good for daylight use, but not very functional for night cooking. Did you know that one single light can create many dark spots? To experience a dark spot, trying cooking at night without an over range light turned on. Not the greatest, right?

Examples of ambient lighting: chandeliers, flushmount lights, recessed down lighting and track lighting.

Accent lighting – Is kind of adding a little bit of jewelery to a kitchen.

Examples of accent lighting: inside kitchen cabinets, behind crown moulding, cabinet showcases for specific objects. E.g dishes, crystal pieces or art work.

Bonus: dimmer switches provide flexibility and can set the mood for a romantic evening at home.

Very important topic. There is nothing that distresses me more than poor lighting in a critical work area. And, the ability to convert the mood to a more relaxing one with subdued lighting when required.

Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI : Completely agree with you. I will not purchase a home if it isn't filled with lots of natural light.
