They’re hard to avoid, no matter how hard you try — insects. And when you find one in your home, no doubt, you’re thinking there’s probably more from where it came from. Unfortunately, there’s no way to completely keep these unwelcome guests from entering your home. But there are ways you can reduce the flow.
The first step, according to usnews.com, is to figure out how the insects got into your home in the first place.
FREE RIDE
You won’t probably want to admit it, but you’re one reason these insects are in your home in the first place. It’s easy for insects to catch a ride on a jacket, shoe, or grocery bag. When it comes to bedbugs, that’s the only way they move from location to location — by attaching to a person, animal, or object. And it has nothing to do with how clean you keep your home.
While grabbing a ride in this manner doesn’t happen often, even if one or two pests get inside your house from time-to-time, they’ll breed if they can find a consistent food source.
WEATHER
Seasonal change will make insects seek shelter from extreme weather conditions, whether it’s the heat or cold. And it’s just not insects and spiders you need to worry about when the temperature changes…..rodents like to invite themselves into your home, as well.
Weather patterns and drought also play a role in bringing these pests into your home. If there’s a lack of rain, insects and rodents will be looking for moisture/water sources.
THEY MOVED IN FIRST
If you just moved into a new home and already are finding pests, it’s possible they were there first.
THEY LIKE YOUR DECORATING
In addition to choosing your home for a food source, some insects/spiders might pick your home due to your decorating. For example, brown recluse spiders prefer dark spaces away from people, so they look for something to hide in. So, by avoiding clutter — papers, boxes, etc. — you’ll reduce the willingness for these insects to want to move in.
Outside, avoid putting black plastic down in home gardens and covering it with mulch or wood chips to control weeds. This is another great place for insects/spiders to hide that could eventually get into your home.
WHAT TO DO?
Remove the temptation of food by cleaning up crumbs on counter tops and keeping food containers sealed.
Make sure entrances to your home, such as doors and windows, are properly sealed. Use caulking to close up any small holes that might be nearby.
Be on the look out, especially for bedbugs, by checking around your nightstand and flipping your mattress on a regular basis.
For those insects or spiders lurking around that you might not see, get sticky traps. While it may not control your bug problem, you’ll at least be alerted if more of these insects start showing up on these traps.
Don’t leave piles of laundry around. It’s a great place for insects and spiders to hide. But don’t do the wash every time you see a bug land on you. The best thing to do is to throw a clothing item into the tumble dry cycle since tumble dryers get in excess of 180 degrees, a high enough temperature to kill insects. But never use an oven or microwave.
