How Fast Can Your Website Drop In Rankings?

By
Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Fusion

The Saskatoon real estate market has been extremely so far in 2008 and unfortunately it has left me with little time to continue to blog and put effort into my website.  Today I checked my google rankings and was sad to see that my ranking had dropped about 6 spots.  Is this common for people to drop this much?  The last time I checked was about 3 weeks ago.  Unfortunately during that time I haven't had free time to spend updating my website which I know that I must do moving forward.  I am finding the time I spent early on in my website is paying off very well as I have earned a lot of business from the exposure my website has gained although it's a double edge knife.  The more business I get, the less time I have to put towards my website to make sure it holds its ranking.  Any information or experience people may have for balancing the updating of your website and the busy schedule of a real estate agent would be greatly appreciated.  Also any information on how much your website should fluctuate in google rankings would be great!

Rankings always fluctuate. The main reason is the keyword category competition. You are ranking good for a phrase, then someone optimizes their site and the search engines start to rank them better.

One thing that will kill your ranking s is being stale. Google said at a recent search industry forum that if a site never changes, then it is not considered 'current and relevent'

I move about 3-4 spots in either direction.  I don't know how to get it back up.

This can happen. It's a non ending struggle to try and stay as high as possible in the rankings. If only there were more time.

I know I go up and down quite a bit, and it seems sometimes days I have higher traffic my site goes up  a notch or two, but then sometimes can move dramatically for no apparent reason...but it would sem it has to do with other sites being linked to maybe..?

I check almost every other day and my ranking is changing constantly.  Fustrating at times and rewarding other times.

Blogging is the best way to keep your rankings high as it keeps the content fresh.  You can also target key words.  I like to blog local events before they happen so that anyone looking for information on the event comes across my site.  I know it works because I get calls asking where they should park and then they wind up asking about house prices!

Any new content can help, and blogging is especially good. Though it is usually best if your main blog is running directly on your site.  It is especially competitive for key Real Estate Terms in any area. So if you go several weeks with no new info you could easily plummet.  Content is king!  The more relevant info you have overall on your site, the less vulnerable you will be.

A few years back Google use to update its databases every 4-6 months, but that philosophy has recently changed. This is why you are able to create a website and have it indexed on Google within hours now (which we do on a daily basis).

Continue to create new content for your website (2+ pages a week), continue to update your homepage with new content, create unique content blog articles and link back to your website, and work on other backlinks.

Your website should get back to higher rankings. Also don't freak out if you drop 6 spots all of a sudden. Check your sites rankings based on a month or longer. Sites are like stocks... in a few week your site can go up and down. But its the long hual that really matters.

At the SEO industry conference last month we were told by managers from Google, Yahoo, MSN Live, etc that the secret is to have 'current and relevent' content. When we optimize real estate websites we market through numerous side door opportunities; all being relevent to the real estate business.

Our organic optimization process improves targeted keyword rankings in a search engine friendly way.

Kari,

Good question. I'm trying to figure this SEO thing out also. One day it's up 2, next day it's down 5 (or 3 pages back).

I think its always going to move up and down. Like Bill said earlier if you arent doing anything someone else most likely is. If it was static it certainly wouldnt be fair.

Well, I think if you do what you need to, keep info updated and put as much time as you can, you should be happy. There will  always be the ones bigger and faster than you that will  make you jump up and down. Just keep at it as consistent as you can.

Hi Kari, working on your web presence is something you can do in small chunks over time, consistency, like a lot of things related to real estate is key. I agree with the others, if you don't have the time to do it yourself, hire someone to either help with the real estate side or the web side, whichever side will either make you more money or what will allow you to focus more on the activities you enjoy.

Hi Kari, I know it can be frustrating, but if it is any consolation, sometimes just being listed on the first page is all you need.  In several cases, I am listed as the 5th or 7th link on Google BUT if you have a good meta description that can make all the difference and people WILL be attracted to your link info and click on your website...  good luck!

You should be very happy that you are keeping so busy.  That is a very good sign.  I, like the others who commented before me, would say to hire someone to continue to add new, fresh content to your website, and you should easily maintain a top position without compromising your income.

My Website moves up and down the Google Rankings all the time. I have learned to contanstly be willing to revise and look for what is working well.

Active Rain appears to be the biggest help to putting my website on the map. I know some pay for ranking spots (outside of Pay Per Click) and I might do that here soon.

My position on getting and maintain great rankings is this...  Do what you need to do to rank high (preferrably #1) for your preferred search phrase.  Then do everything you did again...  This will lock in your rankings fairly consistently.  When you slip, go back and do it again...

Last part... When you get busy, that means you are making money...  Hire an assistant to do some of your online work including blogging...  That way you can do the selling...  Eventually if you do it right you may even be able to hire someone to do the selling...  Now you have a business.

Still figuring it out - I have been bouncing from #1 to #10 and back.  Don't know the cause.  It seems to be a Google gremlin.

Keep in mind that Google has a great many data centers and those results are not identical at any given point of time.  There are tools to look at your rank position across lots of data centers simultaneously.

One of those can be found here.
