The Permanent Record Power of the World Wide Web
In this day and age of Social Media permanence of the post should be consider.
The Permanent Record Power of the World Wide Web
This memory comes from a decade or three ago when I was still in grade school. I can remember hearing my grade school teacher telling a student..."that is going on your permanent record." To me that sounded so damning and like something you could never overcome. One screw up and it would be on your permanent record, and oh my how could you get by in life with a black mark on your permanent record.
Now I look back and laugh. I have no idea where my grade school permanent record went. And thank goodness for that, because in fourth grade I rolled my eyes at something Sister Henry said and got sent to the principal's office. The record of that is nowhere to be found, and I was still able to get my real estate license in spite of that infraction. In Colorado you have to have a background check before you can get your RE license. I'm sure glad that grade school record got lost.
Today there is a new and real permanent record. Teachers from my grade school days had no idea of the power of the internet and the world wide web, and that the web REALLY is a PERMANENT RECORD.
If you don't want it public...don't put it on the web. Even posting something and then taking it down, doesn't protect you. It's still there in cached pages and you have no idea who may have copied it and saved it. If you saved an incriminating or embarrassing photo on Facebook, you have no idea where that ended up and who did what with the picture. It could show up at some point later when you least expect it and ruin your perfectly good day.
Employers are researching job applicants on the web. They are checking social media and anyplace else where you might show up. Did you get mad and send a nasty email to someone? That can come back to you as well.
What do you want people to know about you? Do you want someone to know about some youthful, or even more recent, indiscretion you may have made?
Here are some questions you might want to ask yourself before you post something on the web:
- Would you want your parents, kids or significant other to see it?
- Would you want your boss to see it?
- If you are the boss would you want your employees or customers to see your posting?
- What are the future implications of what you want to post?
- Are you still going to be happy with the picture or words a few years from now?
We all have to take responsibility for what we put on the web. Think long and hard about what you post and maybe sleep on it for a night. What you put on the web today will still be around tomorrow and for years to come. The world wide web is your permanent record, and what do you want your permanent record to say about you?
