St. Patrick's Day is March 17th, it's time to start planning for some green beer and Irish festivities. This time of year always reminds me of my college days in Burlington Vermont where the Irish pubs opened at the crack of dawn and served up green bagels, green eggs, and green beer. By noon, we were walking to the next party as the day went on and the parties resembled Animal House. Those days are decades behind me now and fun is defined way differently with "Leprechauns" leaving chocolate coins and four leaf clover necklaces around the house for the kids--I'm sure I'll still have a Guinness though. :)
If you find yourself in North County San Diego this St. Patrick's Day, here are our top choices for a great party spot as chosen by the locals:
Carlsbad
O'Sullivan's Irish Pub and Restaurant
Our first stop is Carlsbad where the famous O'Sullivan's Irish Pub is a landmark in the village. They have a location in Carlsbad as well as one in Escondido. Check out the website by clicking the photo below so you can see the line up for this St. Patty's Day as it goes the entire weekend. The outdoor area is our favorite. Expect a huge crowd and have a blast. People at the beach are happy so there is a great vibe, live music and yummy comfort food.
Encinitas
Encinitas Ale House
Next up on the list is another local favorite, the Encinitas Ale House. This place is known for it's beer selection, 80 Beers in 80 Days contest, special rare tap days and exotics as well as their St. Patrick's Day weekend festival. Check out their website for the beer list by clicking below. Encinitas will be hoppin' with a fun, artsy surfer crowd. There are several spots celebrating the holiday so doing a little bar hopping will be brilliant in the crisp March air on foot.
San Marcos
Churchills Pub and Grille
Our last stop on the St. Patrick's Day weekend of festivities is Churchills Pub and Grille on San Marcos Blvd. Voted Best Bar of North County San Diego, this is the locals hangout as well as the beer lover's dream. Great atmosphere, decadent dishes and a killer beer list are what make this Pub a favorite tucked behind San Elijo Hills in San Marcos.
Dana's Designated Driver Tip:
Please drink responsibly. There will be tons of people out and about. Have fun, take your time and choose a designated driver or order Uber. Guinness makes one of the best tasting non-alcoholic beers that I've tried. It's called Kaliber and you can order it by clicking on the picture if you are over the age of 21.
