A Florida Bald Eagle Love Story

Last summer when we first arrived in Florida and moved into our home, our neighbor told us that there was aOzzie the Bald Eagle bald eagle that would be arriving in a few months and could be seen on the roof of a house across the lake. He said it had been doing this for years and told us to watch for it.  He said that it would stay there for hours and then swoop down into the lake, grab dinner and fly off.  This news was exciting for me, because I had never seen one before and because I think they are the most magnificent birds.

Months later, I was on our patio and looked out and saw a large bird fly by and land on the neighbor’s home across the lake and I knew that it was the visitor we had been waiting for.  It was a cloudy and somewhat rainy day and I grabbed my camera and took the best pictures I could.  I watched it sit up there majestically for most of the afternoon, until it flew off.

Two days later, we read in the paper that “Ozzie”, a popular and well-known bald eagle had died.  I didn’t know if it was the one we saw, but our eagle has never returned.  There is much more to the story in this Washington Post link about Ozzie and his mate, Harriet, and their love story.  The good news is that Harriet has two baby eaglets in her nest that we can view thanks to Dick Pritchett, a local real estate agent, who set up a live eagle cam on his property where Ozzie and Harriet nested and shares their story.

Very cool Susan Laxson . We have Bald Eagles here and it is easy to watch them for hours as they are so majestic.
