Rocky Mountain High - "I don't think it means what you think it means"

Rocky Mountain High

Several years ago, Colorado was one of the first States to legalize Medical Marijuanna. John Denver's song, Rocky Mountain High, had been our unofficial state anthem for almost three decades when that happened.

People assumed the lyrics were about marijuanna, but Denver himself was always quick to point out that they were wrong, that people who hadn't been to the Rocky Mountains couldn't understand because they had never:

experienced the elation, the celebration of life, the joy of living
that one feels when he observes something as wondrous
as the Perseid meteor shower
on a moonless,
cloudless night, when there are so many stars

that you have a shadow from the starlight,
and you are out camping with your friends,

your best friends, and introducing them to one of nature's
most spectacular light shows for the first time.

People joke about our Rocky Mountain High all the time, but this is what it really means . . .

We certainly have the distiction of being a state with legalized marijuana, but no appropriate song to be misunderstood. Ha. I always liked John Denver and Annie's Song especially. Colorado is pure gorgeous. D

To hear his telling of the making of the song, you could almost feel the majesty of what he saw, Debb. It is indeed breathtaking.

Being a grad from that era, I knew the implications being made regarding this song.  Funny, I never thought that was what John Denver was really singing about.  To know anything of the man would lead your thoughts elsewhere ...

Mimi,

We never thought it related to marijuana.  In high school, Annie was briefly my best friend,...Her parents owned the local country club, and her father had a great recipe for ranch ribs which I use to this day...  A

Too cute, Alexandra. That's a special memory. I thought it was so sad when they broke up, and tragic when he died.

Mimi, the photographs that you included in your video are a great representation of the beauty in our area.    Your windmill shot is probably my favorite though.

Unfortunately,  Rocky Mountain high has taken on a new meaning for many people.  Oh well....to each his own.

It is an interesting phenomenon, is it not, Sondra?

Great video and explanation Mimi.

I have been to many of those "high" places and did know the feeling that he speaks of.

Mimi

It never occured to me in all these years that is meant anything other than Denver's musing about the Rocky Mountains. But I can see how the current legalization could lead people to make the wrong assumption!

That is an incredibly beautiful photo with the windmill.  As beautiful as it is I know that no image could come close to expressing actually standing there.  Thanks for sharing.  Mark

PS - Mimi, a very special array of pics in your video.  Special.

Thanks, Rebecca. When I was in college in Boulder in the 70s, we would go to the Pioneer Inn in Nederland to try to catch a glimpse of him. They used to "jam" there after a day of recording at nearby Caribou. Great memories.

It's an experience and special feeling living in Colorado. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I do love that song from John Denver, and the recent jokes have become trite for me. They never really did make me laugh. They are too predictable.

Hi Mimi -- it is rather ironic that many people think they know the story behind John Denver's song.   Timing and knowledge of history are important.
