There was a song "Go West young man." Why go North?

For people who have gone north. Why did you do it? Was it to be closer to family? Was it a job change? Was it the chance to just do something different? 

Did you have a hard time selling your home? Did you just decide to go before the house was sold and spend nights worrying when it would?

I am curious about these things.
